Apparently stitching on black fabric until I go blind is a thing I do now.

For those who don't watch anime, NERV was the organization behind the Human Instrumentality Project in Neon Genesis Evangelion.

The original pattern calls for it to be stitched in black on white fabric, but I’ve always been partial to the red on black version of the logo. I’ve never been able to get a truly accurate picture, but the colors look amazing in person.

This was one of their free patterns for August. The pattern calls for white aida, but as soon as I was holding the skeins in my hand I thought the colors would look really good on a darker fabric. I chose navy blue because I have four other projects in my queue that need to be stitched on black and there's only so much my eyes can take.

Or at least that's what I've been calling it in my head. Look at this adorable grumpy face:

Pattern by Shylah Addante (a.k.a. Books and Hooks) on Craftsy.

Yes, another chibi. I can't help it; they're cute.

And I finally figured out why all my pictures have suddenly been looking so green lately. The tree outside my apartment got off to a late start this spring but has finally filled in, and it fills the entire field of view of my windows. All the light coming in is now being filtered through the leaves.

I may not be posting Supernatural episode reviews anymore, but I haven't forgotten about the show or Chibi Dean. He's finally finished!

He's looking a little blue because it's very overcast today.

The backstitching on Dean was even more of a nightmare than it was on Sam. At least Sam had a white shirt and a tan jacket. Backstitching in black on dark grey and darker grey was giving me fits. Ultimately I wound up cranking up my lamp as bright as it would go, using my LED headlamp, and using my 10X lighted magnifier while wearing my glasses all at the same time to try to see what I was doing.

Only one more project in this series and then I never have to use this horrible, horrible fabric ever again.

This time it's chibi werewolf Derek Hale.

Pattern by YijiCrafts on Etsy (aka YijiTumbles on Tumblr) based on her own adorable fan art. I would link to the pattern, but her Etsy shop appears to be on hiatus and I can’t get to it.

This isn’t a true pattern in that it doesn’t come with a floss chart. It’s up to the stitcher to pick his or her own colors. That’s why I started with this one. I’m not used to picking out my own colors, and with all the grey and black, I figured the only hard color to pick would be the pink.

Sadly, I finished this the day that Jeff Davis announced that Tyler Hoechlin would not be a main cast member in season 5. Guess I’ll have to work on the human Derek pattern while watching Teen Wolf this summer.

Yes, I made another thing. I actually finished this two months ago, but it was looking really dingy due to ten years of sitting partially stitched in my closet and about a year and a half of actually being worked on, and it took me this long to give it a good washing and pressing. I’m very happy with how it turned out, except that maybe I should have used two strands for backstitching, even though I don’t like to.

This is the spot where I normally link to the pattern and give credit to the pattern maker, but in this case I genuinely can’t. I bought the pattern from File 40 (a Man from UNCLE fan club) as part of a kit at MediaWest back in 2002 or 2003. As far as I know, it’s never been offered on the Internet, and the pattern doesn’t credit the pattern maker anywhere, although I assume it was a member of File 40. Just know that it wasn’t me; I just did the stitching.

Pattern by XStitchMyHeart. I would normally link to the pattern, but I got it from her Etsy store, which no longer exists.

I did manage to finish this during the season finale last week, but I wanted to wash it and press it and make it look nice for its final photo. However, my sink was full of dishes that I was deeply uninspired to wash, and then there was a burst pipe under my building that cut off my water for a day.

The original pattern includes the show’s name under the characters, but (a) stitching letters is one of my least favorite things to do, and (b) I think the characters are clearly identifiable without the label. I also shaved off one column from each side of Katrina’s skirt because she just didn’t look right to me.

the_other_sandy: Black and white TV (TV)
WGN has the worst timing. Season finale? Preempt it. Game changing episode? Preempt it. Return from hiatus? Preempt it. And they used to at least run the preempted episodes sometime on Saturday when I would be awake to watch them. Now they run them very late on the same night, which I can't stay up to watch because I have to be at work at 7:30 a.m.

And now for the grand unveiling. I finished Sammy!

I already have the supplies I need to make Dean, so I'll be starting on him next episode.

What is it with me and cross stitching chibis lately? I swear I'm working on other things too.

Chibi Cap Magnet.png

Pattern by Cloudsfactory. I intend to make the whole Avengers set someday, but today is not that day.

Chibi Captain America was done on 14 count plastic canvas, and there's a magnet glued to the back.

So, I may have cross stitched Rorschach from Watchmen.

I'm starting to see why I gave up cross stitching all those years ago. All the pro patterns at craft stores are of inspirational sayings or flowers or fluffy animals and such. That's not really my thing. Tumblr has been both a blessing and a curse for pointing me at all the geeky patterns ever.

Angel Ward

Pattern by F.P. Molina.

This is the angel ward from Supernatural. I used DMC 815 because it was the darkest, bloodiest red I already had in my thread box, but it turned out to be a good choice. It's much bolder than the photo makes it look.

And I stitched it while watching the annual Severe Storms Seminar at Fermilab for maximum geekiness.

I plan to make the other two patterns on that page, too. The tattoo will be easy because we know what color it is, but I don't think I want to stitch the devil's trap on black aida cloth. My eyes aren't that good, and neither is the lighting in my apartment. Hasn't the devil's trap been drawn/painted with whatever's been handy? I'm pretty sure we've seen them in white, black, and orange at one time or another. Anybody have any suggestions for what color would look good on white and would go with the red in this angel ward and the black of the anti-possession tattoo?

P.S. -- The angel ward was still in the hoop when I took the photo, so I was trying to crop the hoop out. You would not believe how not at all intuitive it is to crop a photo into a circle and stick it on a colored background in GIMP. Thank goodness for online tutorials, because GIMP's help menu was the most useless thing ever.

ETA: There's nothing like posting pictures of your stitching all over the Internet to make you see where you screwed up your stitch count. I just noticed it today (Apr. 8). Fortunately the errors were in the very last 2 rows, so I only had to pull and redo 9 stitches. Which I did. I'm not re-taking/editing/posting a photo, but I did fix it and rest assured the error was mine and not the pattern's.

It turns out that the third full weekend of every month is International Hermit & Stitch Weekend. I did not know this. I found out too late to participate last month, but I thought I'd give it a try this month. (There's an official sign-up and blog community, but I'm not much of a joiner, so I just did this for me).

I also thought I'd take a break from the big project I've been working on for months and months, and do something small to remind myself that sometimes these projects can actually end, so I made this:

Chibi Johnlock

Chibi Sherlock and Watson are based on a pattern by Caroline Selby over at Crafty Companion. If you just clicked through to look at it, you'll see that I took rather a lot of liberties with the colors. I just wanted John and Sherlock to be wearing the outfits I most commonly think of them in. I've never chosen my own colors before and I'm mostly pleased with the ones I picked, except for Sherlock's scarf. The colors looked warmer on the skein than they did when stitched, and I should have chosen blues more than two shades apart. The contrast looked good on the skeins but was less obvious when stitched.

Oh, well. Call it a learning experience. I still think they're adorable.

This magnet-making thing is addictive. I’m going to have to fight off the temptation to keep going though (I have a pile of little patterns that would make cute magnets and a boring metal bookshelf at work I’m tired of looking at), because I’ve been ignoring the big project I’ve been working on that I really want to finish.

Pattern by Starrley. I didn’t make any changes to it, but if I had to do it over again, I think I’d go one shade lighter on the dark grey.
the_other_sandy: Kaleidoscope (Kaleidoscope)
It's only been 2 years since I last completed a cross stitch project, and I've already finished another one! (Yes, that dripping sound you hear would be sarcasm. I am the slowest stitcher in the entire world.)

John and Sherlock Pixies

Pattern by Dork Stitch.

It's BBC Sherlock and John! I did make one slight alteration to the original pattern by making John Watson one pixel shorter. I just thought his legs were too long and that he was more than one pixel shorter than Sherlock.

This was my first time cross stitching on plastic canvas. I screwed up one of Sherlock’s eyes, but it ended up kind of looking like he’s raising one eyebrow, so I’ll live with it. I plan to glue magnets to the backs as soon as I figure out what type of glue would work best (the backs are lumpier with thread than expected).

I did most of the stitching while listening to a series of Great Courses lectures on the history of the English language. Because apparently cross stitching Johnlock wasn’t nerdy enough.

Grr. Argh.

Have you ever had one of those days where even though you’ve been stitching for years, possibly decades, you suddenly can’t find the holes in your aida cloth? And your stitches are all lopsided, and after giant swaths of tidy stitches, there’s suddenly a section that looks like an 8-year-old’s first project?

Sigh.

Yeah.
the_other_sandy: Kaleidoscope (Kaleidoscope)
OMG, someone made a cross stitch pattern for Monty Python and the Holy Grail!

You know, if someone who reads this LJ and knows me personally wanted to buy me a Christmas present...

ETA: Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!
the_other_sandy: Kaleidoscope (Kaleidoscope)
I just tripped over all the fannish cross stitch patterns ever on Tumblr, DeviantArt, and Etsy. I really need to work on the projects I already have before I acquire any new ones. But some of them are free! And they're awesome! There's even a Sleepy Hollow character set already! How am I supposed to say no to that?
the_other_sandy: Kaleidoscope (Kaleidoscope)
I need to borrow someone else's skills and creativity since mine are largely limited to cross-stitching. My library is getting rid of a whole lot of small plastic magazine-type storage boxes (the kind that let you neatly store magazines upright and spine out like books) that are about the perfect size for storing digest-sized zines, which is something I've been looking for for ages.

The problem is that these plastic boxes are a hideous mustard yellow and have seen many decades of heavy use in a public library. I plan to give them a thorough washing, but that won't fix the mustard yellow problem. I know Krylon makes a spray paint just for plastic, but I've had problems with paper embedding itself into paint and becoming one with the painted surface before and I don't want that to happen to my zine covers. Will that be an issue with the Krylon for plastic? I'm also up for any other suggestions to make these boxes look more decorative and less ugly. The Krylon just happened to be the only thing I could think of (hence me needing to borrow someone else's skills and creativity).

Any ideas, magic flist?
