I'm having trouble drumming up any enthusiasm for next weekend's Stargate Creation Con. I kind of hate to miss it as it's only 25 minutes from my apartment, but I'm just not feeling it right now for some reason. Somebody tell me why I should go.

For those of you who have read my con reports before, this will not be one of my obsessively detailed ones. For one thing, I'm still sick (have been since last Wednesday). For another thing, Supernatural fandom exhaustively documents fandom goings on like no other fandom I've ever been in. I have no doubt that the entire con will be up on YouTube by the time I finish typing this. I'll just hit the highlights. Meanwhile, try to find the YouTube vids of the main panel of the day. I really can't do it justice.

The original plan was for Jared and Misha to each do a half hour alone and to also do a half hour together. Creation kept telling us that Jensen wasn't scheduled to do a panel, but did anyone really think he was going to fly across the country just for autographs and photo ops? If nothing else, I didn't think he'd be able to resist the temptation to screw with Misha and/or Jared while they were on stage. I was right. :-)

Shout-outs to [livejournal.com profile] agt_spooky, [livejournal.com profile] asyouleft, [livejournal.com profile] daneffew, [livejournal.com profile] seesmooshrun, [livejournal.com profile] zazreil, and Jeanne the LJ-less. It was nice to see you all again. Sorry if I gave any of you the plague.

So, you know how I said I wasn't going to be able to attend the con because I was sick? Well, Creation never got back to me about what would happen to my unused ticket, and several people told me that in their experience Creation would not give me a refund or exchange my ticket, so I skipped the first half of the con to sleep and ply myself with cold meds, and then my germs and I attended the second half of the con. Deepest apologies to anyone I gave the plague to. I would've stayed home if I could've gotten reimbursed somehow.

That said, there won't be a Friday report (well, there was, but it was just me whining about being sick and not attending the con). Fortunately, I didn't miss much. I love Richard Speight, but I've seen him before. I'm not interested in Jason Manns, and Matt Cohen was doing a second panel today.

The first two guests of the day were Fredric Lehne and Aldis Hodge. I've seen them both before, so I skipped them in favor of some extra sleep and another dose of cold meds. The first panel I attended was for Matt Cohen.

This year was kind of a weird one for questions. There were a lot of people asking the same questions over and over again, and quite a few facepalm-inducing ones. It got to the point that if someone asked an interesting and intelligent question, the whole room would make sounds of appreciation and awe.

And just when I thought Adam Malin Gary Berman couldn't possibly get more annoying, he found a bell from somewhere (it sounded like a bicycle bell) and used it repeatedly during the auctions.

Sorry the report is late. I didn't get home until after midnight and my brain was fried. David Hewlett's autograph session lasted over 4 hours because he insisted on talking to everyone and personalizing every autograph even though Creation told him not to. I was #502 in line.

I had a convention first this weekend, which is saying something because I've been going to cons for 26 years. The button on my jeans separated into its 2 component parts during the first panel and fell off. Since I wasn't staying at the hotel (I only live about 25 minutes away) and had nothing else to change into, I had to hunt up a hotel maintenance man and borrow his pliers to put my pants back together. I'm sure that's a story that will be retold in the maintenance department for some time to come.

But on to the part you actually care about: the panels.

After Michael's panel, I waited 4 hours for David Hewlett's autograph. Michael started slightly after David and finished his whole line while David was on Row J. David was reading his personalizations out loud as he was signing, and it was like listening to a stand-up routine. I asked him how sorry he was that he'd ever introduced Joe to Twitter and he said he regretted it every second.

Then I went home and fell on my face and slept for 11 hours. I remember when I used to be able to do a whole con weekend on minimal sleep and food. Apparently I need to start acting my age.

Oh, and there won't be a report on Sunday because I only attended the con on Friday and Saturday.

I've been wondering why Creation has been all "Check out our awesome new con hotel for 2010!" for the Chicago Stargate and Supernatural cons. There was an article in the newspaper today about the Wyndham O'Hare going out of business. They'll be closing their doors for good by January 1st.

I've been to at least 5 cons at that hotel.

Last year, I was complaining that there were only 7 rows of general admission seating available on Sunday (Jensen & Jared's day). This year, there were only 4! And Creation oversold them like whoa. People were standing along the back and side walls because they literally had nowhere to sit. Creation staffers kept coming by and ordering them to sit down, and they kept explaining that they couldn't. After 3 or 4 rounds of this, Creation finally brought out extra chairs to place along the walls. I think the people who got them were lucky. I was crammed in so tightly that the only part of me I could move was my arms from the elbows down. It made taking notes entertaining. I could also only see about 2/3 of one projector screen. Thank goodness it was the side with Jared on it. ;-)

So that was my weekend. It was great amounts of fun.

And I haven't typed this much since I finished grad school.

Once again, the general admission tickets sold out before I even knew they were on sale, so for the second year in a row, I owe somebody else for being able to come. [livejournal.com profile] asyouleft managed to score a gold ticket from someone right before the con and sold me her general admission ticket on Friday night. Yay! This is the first year I was able to attend more than one day of the con.

Wow, that turned out so tl;dr I'm not even sure I would read the whole thing. And this was only Saturday. Stay tuned for the Sunday report.

I wasn't at Day 2 of the con, so I'll just skip ahead to Day 3.

In keeping with my inability to go to cons without running into people I know anymore, I saw (and got to talk to) [livejournal.com profile] asyouleft and [livejournal.com profile] daneffew today. This is the third con I've seen [livejournal.com profile] daneffew at this year so far.

I also can't go to cons with celebrity guests without randomly running into at least one of those guests outside of a con event. I stopped by the hotel front desk this morning to see if anyone had turned my jacket in to the lost & found, and when I turned around to leave, Gary Jones was in line right behind me. When I came out of the bathroom later in the morning, Joe Flanigan was standing in the hallway not 5 feet away getting briefed by con staff on where he needed to be next.

It's so sad to see the Stargate fandom kind of waning. SG-1 and Atlantis have both been canceled, and there hasn't been a lot of enthusiasm for Universe that I've seen so far (when we were asked twice from the stage yesterday if we were looking forward to Universe, there was only a tiny pocket of tepid applause in response). The attendance at this con isn't even close to matching the attendance at Creation's Supernatural cons, where even the one day general admission tickets sell out. For this con, even the autograph and photo op tickets didn't sell out for any of the guests.

There won't be a Day 2 report because I'm not at the con today, but I will be there tomorrow and taking plenty of notes.

I almost didn't get to go this year. I have bad luck with guest cancellations at Creation cons, and since the con hotels Creation regularly uses here are all within twenty minutes of my apartment, I always wait until I hear through the fannish grapevine that the actor(s) I want to see are actually in town and then buy a general admission pass at the door. Well this year, the Sunday general admission passes all sold out in advance (and no wonder--there were only seven rows of general admission seating!). Then on Friday afternoon, I got an email from a listmate on Yahoo!Groups who said the con might open up some Sunday general admission tickets, so I figured it wouldn't hurt to stop by the con hotel after work and see if that was true. It was! And so I got to go. Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] leenys!

When I got in the car to drive over to the con hotel this morning, the song playing when the radio kicked on was "Thunderstruck" by AC/DC, which was the song used for the Impala retrospective at WinchestMidwest last August. It was immediately followed by a commercial for Jared, the jewelry store chain. Their tag line is "It can only be Jared." Every time I hear it, jewelry is the last thing I'm thinking of.

Jared's and Jensen's panels were preceded by an auction of things, both Supernatural and otherwise. Some of the vinyl banners that hung in the panel ballroom (with accompanying autograph ticket) went for over $500!

And then came the important part: the panels.

And then it was over. And I was sad. 8-(

I'm going to miss these two together when they move on to other things in their hopefully long and successful careers.

I just got back from Jensen and Jared's panels at the Creation con in Chicago. It was exactly what I'd hoped it would be like. The two of them are adorable individually, but together they achieve critical mass on adorableness.

I didn't even decide to go to the con until last night. I've had really bad luck with guests I want to see having to cancel at the last minute, so I waited until I heard on LJ and Yahoo!Groups that Jensen and Jared had actually arrived at the hotel before committing (I only live 10 minutes away from the con hotel). That meant I had to buy my ticket this morning at the door. When I got there at 7:45 a.m., the ticket line stretched down one hall, turned a corner, down another hall, turned a corner, down another hall, turned a corner, down another hall, turned a corner, then went 2/3 of the way up a flight of stairs. I was hoping to get to the front of the line before I retired, but I will say this about Creation--they have registration down to a science. I was out of the line with my wristband on within 20 minutes. \0/

The dealer room looked fairly big until you realized that most of the tables were selling the same things, namely Creation licensed merchandise. There was also some Steve Carlson merchandise (CDs and T-shirts) and some vendors selling things from other fandoms (Buffy, Angel, and Smallville, which are the other fandoms showcased at this con, but other fandoms too). I wasn't going to buy anything, but they debuted some new T-shirts this weekend that were actually nice for a change. I got one of Sam and one of Sam & Dean.

Fan songvids ran in the ballroom right before the Q&A, which I mostly didn't get to see because people kept milling about in the aisles. Gary Berman, one of the founders of Creation Entertainment, warmed up the crowd by asking if everybody had seen Jensen and Jared in the photo ops yet. "Are they even more beautiful in person? I'm attracted to them, in a very manly way." I'm creeped out by you, Gary, in a very fanly way. Gary is a little too 'circus ringmaster' for me.

And now for the part you actually care about: Jensen and Jared each did an individual Q&A for half an hour, followed by half an hour of both of them on stage together. They were giving each other crap right out of the gate.

Jensen )

Jared )

I really wanted to see Jared and Jensen on stage at the same time just once while the show was still in production and they were still close friends, and it was totally worth it. I had a great time.

The only fan gatherings I've been to before this have been for my SGAHC Yahoo!Group at various conventions. All the planning in the world usually only manages to get about a dozen of us in the same place at the same time.

Tonight was the Supernatural fan meet-up, hosted by [livejournal.com profile] spn_creationcon, for the Chicago Creation event. There were about eighty people there. We took over an entire section of the restaurant. Each place setting included a goodie bag containing a flier from Fandom Rocks (proceeds from the purchase of raffle tickets went to them), a bumper sticker ("Driver picks the music, shotgun shuts his cakehole"), a season 2 trading card, a keychain of both Winchester boys, peanut M&Ms, salt packets, matches, a fake fake ID (mine said Dean was Mayor Richard Daley), and a mix CD of songs that have been used on the show. Dinner consisted of soup or salad, an entree, and dessert. A very nice woman sitting across from me decided to say hello by buying our end of the table a round of purple nurples. I'd never had one before. It was very sweet of her, but man those things are vile. I'm glad I waited until the food came to try it. It took me three spicy chicken strips to wash the taste out of my mouth. Also, through sheer random plopping down in a vacant seat, I wound up sitting next to [livejournal.com profile] kroki_refur and [livejournal.com profile] buffyaddict13, whose fic I've read. Dinner was followed by a raffle of Supernatural merchandise (the comics, tie-in novels, trading cards, etc.) at which I totally failed to win anything. The whole event lasted about three hours. Kudos to those who planned it for being able to pull off such a huge group activity.
the_other_sandy: Chicago skyline (Chicago)
Personally, I think Creation Entertainment sucks more than I can possibly tell you and I never, ever want to go to one of their conventions ever again. Ever. However, if they're going to book a con with Jared Padalecki as a guest and hold it 10 minutes from my apartment, what's a girl to do?

I know he'll probably cancel. He canceled the last Chicago horror con, and Joe Flanigan canceled the Chicago Stargate con before that (Creation gets a lot of guest cancellations), so I refuse to buy tickets in advance. With the con only 10 minutes away, I'll take my chances and wait until he's absolutely confirmed before I show up.
