Last year, I was complaining that there were only 7 rows of general admission seating available on Sunday (Jensen & Jared's day). This year, there were only 4! And Creation oversold them like whoa. People were standing along the back and side walls because they literally had nowhere to sit. Creation staffers kept coming by and ordering them to sit down, and they kept explaining that they couldn't. After 3 or 4 rounds of this, Creation finally brought out extra chairs to place along the walls. I think the people who got them were lucky. I was crammed in so tightly that the only part of me I could move was my arms from the elbows down. It made taking notes entertaining. I could also only see about 2/3 of one projector screen. Thank goodness it was the side with Jared on it. ;-)

Jensen & Jared

Usually each of the guys does a half hour panel by himself and a half hour together. This year, they were only on stage for an hour instead of an hour and a half, but they were both on stage for the whole hour (at their request).

The song that played during their entrance was the sitcom theme song that played during the opening credits of "Changing Channels." When asked what season 6 would be like, Jared joked that it was going to be the sitcom from that episode.

While they were getting settled, Jared solemnly asked everyone to ask Jensen some questions and pretend to be interested in what he had to say, otherwise Jensen would cry and Jared had to work with him all week. (Jensen spent a fair amount of time making his 'why do I put up with him?' face.) When the very first questioner asked Jensen a question, Jared was profoundly grateful toward her for doing him that favor. ;-)

When it comes to the current story, Jared is more excited about being a vessel than Jensen. Jared likes to play evil, and playing Lucifer is a lot of fun for him. Jensen isn't all that wild about being a vessel, but he does like that Dean is more directly involved in the mythology now.

They were both asked how they would play the characters they were supposed to be vessels for. Jared, of course, has already had a shot at playing Lucifer in "The End." He likes that Lucifer isn't a cackling, mustache-twirling villain, but that he instead sounds so reasonable and caring as he seduces you to the dark side. Jensen said he totally planned to rip off John Travolta to play the archangel Michael, and Jared asked, "From Battlefield Earth?" Jensen just kind of rolled his eyes and said, "Yes, from Battlefield Earth," in a long-suffering tone. (Actually from the movie Michael.)

When asked how he would feel about the show ending and having to say good-bye to all the people he's spent so much time with for the last 5 years, Jensen joked that he can't seem to get a job outside of Vancouver, so he'd probably keep seeing the same people he's working with now.

A fan asked Jared for advice on becoming an actor. For all he jokes around during his panels, this is something Jared is really passionate about and it was interesting to see the serious side of him for a minute. He said that the first thing you have to do is love to act. You can't go into the profession expecting fame and riches because so few people make it to that level, and the factors that get you there are usually completely out of your control. He went on to say that being on television doesn't make you an actor (and Jensen jumped in here for a second to say that we could all probably think of examples where that was true); it's acting and loving the craft that makes you an actor. So his advice? Just keep acting.

How would Jared and Jensen react to the end of the world? Jared would pull his head in like a turtle and hide; Jensen would channel John Travolta from Battlefield Earth.

As for Sam's relationship with Castiel, Jared hopes that they both ultimately fight on the same side, but he doesn't ever see them becoming friends.

Jensen's unfulfilled dreams include having kids, BASE jumping, and flying a plane. Jared would like to have kids too, but he also said his dreams keep evolving.

A fan asked them to name some of the gifts they've given each other. Jared said a negligee and Jensen said a gift certificate to Sizzler. Jensen then said that both he and Jared make decent money and neither of them see the need to wait if they see something they want, so they have to get very creative when buying things for each other.

Jensen once again told the story about the "Eye of the Tiger" clip and how it ballooned out of a prank that started with Jared deciding not to give Jensen his cue to see how he would react. Jensen stressed that it hadn't been planned or rehearsed at all, at which point Jared piped up, "But he's probably been singing it since he was eight years old." Jensen nearly snorted coffee out of his nose.

A fan asked if Sam and Dean were ever going to talk about the voicemail message Dean left for Sam in "Lucifer Rising" (the one where Dean apologized and said they were still brothers, but due to nefarious tampering, Sam heard that Dean was done with him and thought he was a monster). Jensen didn't think there was anything to talk about because the message wasn't real, but Jared pointed out that Sam didn't know that. They had a good little debate going for awhile and Jensen seemed surprised that Sam would think Dean would ever say something like that to him and mean it. Jared decided he needed to consult Sam on the issue. Jensen told him to go ahead and do that. Jared said, "Say the word," and Jensen called "Action!" Jared turned into Sam, and then back again when Jensen called "Cut!" Jared did the same thing to Jensen so he could consult Dean.

Jensen said it was tough playing against himself in "The End" because for the first run through, he had to think about how he planned to play the other Dean and react accordingly; then when he played the other Dean, he had to try and remember how he'd played the scene as Dean and react to that. Future Dean was a little tougher for him because Future Dean had no humor left in him. The crew helped him keep the two Deans straight by giving them slightly different wardrobes and by lighting them differently. Meanwhile, Jared didn't have a lot of screen time in the episode, so he flew down to L.A. to talk to Kripke about how to play Lucifer.

Jensen said we should all be careful what we wish for when it comes to a musical episode of Supernatural. For one thing, Jared can't sing. For another thing, Jensen may have a good singing voice, but Dean doesn't, so he wouldn't be using his own voice to sing in the episode.

If they could be on another TV show besides Supernatural, Jensen would like to be on Dirty Jobs and Jared would like to be on Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern (he's the guy who travels around the world to eat still-beating frog hearts and tarantulas on a stick). Then Jensen joked that if Jared were on another show, it would be called Man vs. Food. Jensen said it wasn't uncommon for Jared to finish Jensen's dinner along with his own when they go out to eat. Jared added that when they go out with a bunch of people, he'll wind up with 4 or 5 plates in front of him while he finishes everyone's dinner.

A fan asked what kind of effort went into keeping continuity when you had multiple actors playing the same role (we've had multiple demon Megs, Alastairs, Rubys, Lucifers, and even Sams and Deans). Both Jensen and Jared gave credit to the writers for creating strong characters that it was easy for multiple actors to get a handle on.

Jared was starting to sweat a lot and Jensen teased him about springing a leak. Jensen said that sometimes Jared will start sweating noticeably under the lights while they're filming and always up by his collar where it will show on film. Jensen sometimes keeps a towel in his back pocket to mop Jared off between takes so the sweat won't show.

When asked about their plans after the show ends, both Jensen and Jared joked that Jared was going to sleep for a year. Jensen plans to take whatever jobs he can get because he's not at a level in his career where he can afford to be too choosy. Jared would like to concentrate more on movies because the shooting schedule for TV doesn't give him a lot of time to spend with friends and family. There are friends that he doesn't see for 9 months at a stretch because of the hours he has to work.

When asked which Disney characters they were, Jensen pointed at himself and said "Grumpy," then at Jared and said "Dopey."

A fan asked them to each write each other's profiles for Match.com. Jared's profile for Jensen: tattooed, single, willing to take anything. Jensen's profile for Jared: single white female, oddly tall.

Jensen thinks that Dean is angrier than he himself is, but equally goofy. Jared thinks that he and Sam both tend to make mistakes while trying to do the right thing.

The thing that Jensen is most proud of in his career is working with Kim Manners. He said they still talk about Kim all the time on the set and everyone misses him.

Their favorite spots in Vancouver are Stanley Park, the aquarium, and the drive from Vancouver to Whistler.

Jared & Jensen quote movies at each other just like Sam & Dean do, but they think Sam & Dean have better taste. Jared & Jensen tend to quote stupid movies at each other, like Dumb & Dumber, Anchorman, and Cable Guy.

At the end of the panel, Jared announced he was going to be auctioning off his season 3 Sam watch with the proceeds going towards his mother's students in San Antonio. He had planned to auction it off later, but one woman immediately yelled out "Five hundred dollars!," so Creation started the auction then. Jared sat up on stage holding the watch so the image could be projected up on the big screens while Jensen played auctioneer. It eventually sold for $3500.

The autograph session was immediately afterward, with Jared's line on one side of the stage and Jensen's on the other side. [livejournal.com profile] asyouleft, in her continuing quest to be the awesomest person ever, let me have the Jared autograph from her gold package because she already had his autograph and I didn't. Even Creation was helpful for once, letting us switch badges so I could line up for Jared, then switch back so she could line up for Jensen. Creation had poor Jared on an assembly line. The second he finished signing something, they'd shove something new in front of him. There was no time to talk, but he was doing his darnedest to look up at everybody and at least say hi. I don't think he even had time to focus his eyes on whoever he was looking up at. He's surprisingly tan for someone who lives in Vancouver in November. Jared's autograph line never got much longer than the first set of double doors in the ballroom. Jensen's ran the entire length of the ballroom, then turned the corner and ran along the entire back wall of the room. Someone must have said something to him because the line suddenly started moving much more quickly.

I heard they came out on stage one last time to say good-bye, but I missed it. It was a bad time to make a juice run, I guess.

Julie McNiven

The ballroom cleared out pretty spectacularly after Jared and Jensen left, so I moved over to one of the newly added chairs in the back corner. Not only could I see better, but it had the added benefit of being under an air vent. The room had gotten pretty stuffy so it was nice to feel some air moving.

Julie was supposed to have done her panel on Friday, but I heard she missed her plane. Whatever the reason, she still came anyway and Creation worked her into the schedule. She was just happy that some people stayed to see her after the guys left.

She's flying out to Vancouver tomorrow (Nov. 18) to shoot her next episode of Supernatural. She doesn't know when it's going to air, though.

She claimed that her smile lines have deepened since she started working on the show because Jensen and Jared are so much fun to work with.

She couldn't name another character she'd want to play on Supernatural because there aren't that many female recurring characters to choose from.

If she weren't acting, she'd probably be an elementary school teacher like her dad, but she's wanted to be an actress since her 2nd grade school play.

If she could be on any other TV show on the air, she'd love to be on Lost, V, or Big Love.

Her favorite episode of Supernatural is "Changing Channels." She thought it was hilarious. (It seemed to be all the guests' favorite episode right now.)

A lot of Julie's questions seemed to come from people who actually thought she was Anna. She spent a lot of time saying she didn't know the answers to things like Anna's past relationships with other angels because the writers hadn't told her yet. Then she joked that we were asking really hard questions and she should have done her homework before she came.

Rob Benedict

After Julie's panel was another of Creation's many, many auctions over the weekend. I normally don't participate in these things at all, but one lot of autographed photos contained Joe Flanigan, Jason Momoa, and Jamie Bamber. I'm not made of stone, people. I did some math and decided to see how high the bidding would go. Surprisingly, the bidding started to wind down way below what I thought they were worth just for the 3 I wanted out of a much bigger lot, so I threw in a bid expecting to be outbid a second later. The next thing I know, Gary is pointing at me and yelling, "Sold to the worst seat in the house!," which made everybody turn around and look at me. (P.S., Gary, that seat was much better than the one I was crammed into for Jensen and Jared's panel.) On my way back from paying for them, [livejournal.com profile] asyouleft waved me down from her aisle seat in Gold Ticketland and cemented her place as the awesomest person ever by telling me that all the people sitting near her had gone home and inviting me to sit with her. I got to experience Rob's panel from the rarefied atmosphere of the 8th row, where I could actually see his face without looking at the projector screen.

We all experienced mutual weirdness because Chuck had just been in front of a con audience on Thursday, and now the actor who played him was sitting in front of us. Our con had more people.

Rob said that hooking up with Becky was a real boost for Chuck's self-esteem.

Rob is a member of the band Louden Swain. The first song he ever learned to play on the guitar was "Jesse's Girl" by Rick Springfield. Of his own band's songs, his favorites are "All I Need" and "Better."

His favorite thing about playing Chuck is that Chuck is a good guy. Rob has played a lot of jerks in his career, so it's a refreshing change.

He would love for Chuck to have more action scenes, but he doesn't know how good Chuck would be at them.

Chuck is Kripke's avatar on the show. He and the other writers speak to the fans through Chuck.

Rob's biggest fanboy moment was meeting Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam.

If he weren't working in the arts somehow, he'd probably be an elementary school teacher.

When asked how he prepared to play Chuck, Rob joked that he didn't sleep and drank a lot.

He said the con Chuck attended on the show was a lot weirder than this one, and that he hadn't been wary of coming to this con because everyone on set told him what cons were really like and they all seemed to enjoy doing them.

If he could write an episode of Supernatural, he'd do something campy like The Rocky Horror Picture Show. (I love this idea! I want this way more than a musical episode. On the other hand, Rocky Horror was a musical, so two birds with one stone?)

Jared once said Rob could borrow something from his trailer, so Rob went over and let himself in, only to run into Jared's dogs in full 'protect the trailer' mode. He made a run for it. The PA standing outside said, "Oh, yeah. You can't just walk into Jared's trailer." Rob was thinking, 'now you tell me.' He eventually thought it was funny because Jared has these big protective dogs, while Jensen has a cute little fluffy one.

As Rob was getting up and saying good-bye to all of us, he got a text message from Misha. I think it's cute how they all seem to keep in touch now.

So that was my weekend. It was great amounts of fun.

And I haven't typed this much since I finished grad school.

You're welcome, and thanks for reading. I'm always worried that no one will want to read a con report when they can just watch the whole con for themselves on YouTube.

I'm reading these going, "Huh, I forgot about that part.." lol Eventually one day I will learn to pay attention at these things more then I do!

:) I'm soooo glad the Jared autograph thing worked out! That was like, so perfect in every single way, lol. Creations actually did something that worked out for once, I'm sort of 10x amazed!

Date: 2009-11-18 10:58 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] the-other-sandy.livejournal.com
I was stunned. I was sure it was going to be much more of a hassle than it turned out to be.

Me too! In fact I really do think the whole weekend went by pretty damn well!

Date: 2009-11-18 11:01 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] the-other-sandy.livejournal.com
It was certainly the most fun I've ever had at a Creation con.

Again you gave a thorough recap, thanks. Don't know if you saw me at the con, I'm the one who bumped you just after you took a picture (post-J&J panel)and mumbled "Hi, Sandy" as I sped by (I had to run to meet someone or I would have stopped to actually chat.) Glad you were able to come and enjoy the con, asyouleft deserves many friend-points.

I heard you, but I turned the wrong way to look. By the time I turned the right way and realized it was you, you were too far away to yell 'hi' back. :-(

Oh, well. That's the nature of these things. I saw a couple of people from across the room that I knew but never managed to get close enough to say 'hi' to. Goodness only knows how many people were there that I only know from online so I didn't know what they looked like.
