Whatever happened to 'show, don't tell'?

So. Much. Monologuing. I swear there was 10 minutes of plot padded out with all the exposition ever. Kate's endless tale of everything she did from the last time she appeared in an episode until now felt like toddler storytime at the library.

Speaking of Kate, I'm glad they stuck a few frames of flashback in there, because the big reveal with dramatic music was totally ruined by the fact that I didn't recognize her until Show reminded me of the spectacularly unmemorable episode she appeared in.

And it still irritates the crap out of me every time they do an episode with well-adjusted, in-control werewolves, because that means Sam didn't have to kill Madison.

Meanwhile, the Winchesters were in 'Mayday! Deflect! Deflect!' mode. 'Umm, no I don't need to talk, bro, let's talk about you and what you need/did instead.'

And poor Sammy ended up with a temporary flattop because I didn't have time to give him more hair.

It'd mean more when the show remarks on the Winchesters' hypocrisy if it ever did more than just mention it. Sam occasionally touching on it now and then doesn't mean as much as it used to, especially not with what he's been doing.

It's an ancient Winchester (and Campbell) family tradition to immediately engage in questionable behavior when a relative dies.

And when a family member is injured or they're demonic or they feel like it....

I didn't see it myself, but someone on the internet claims that when the bros were chilling out at the beginning of the episode there was a "No Hunting" sign nearby.

Hee. That would be cute. I didn't see it either, but then I was too busy having flashbacks to Steve and Danny clinking beer bottles on Steve's stretch of beach in the H50 pilot.

I just had to go look, and there is indeed a 'no hunting' sign (http://www.homeofthenutty.com/supernatural/screencaps/displayimage.php?album=212&pid=259912#top_display_media). Although shouldn't it be 'no fishing' since it's right by the water?

Duck hunting maybe?

I am behind on my recaps and, well, everything, but I popped on to LJ just now for two minutes and yours is the post I chose to read - I know, you're honored, right? ;)

Anyway, yes yes yes to all this. Show, don't tell. They about talked my ear off in this one. And like you, I would not have been able to pick Kate out of a lineup so it was good that we got the flashback but it made the reveal very Unrevealing.

The best thing about this whole ep was the 'we' time with the green cooler and the lawn chairs. I'm totally recreating that scene this summer.

Very much enjoying your stitchery along with your recaps. TemporaryFlatTop!Sammy kind of looks like a hedgehog at this point. =)

As am I. I'm still hoping I can post about last week's H50 before this week's airs.

I am. ::does 'I'm not worthy' bow::

The best thing about this whole ep was the 'we' time with the green cooler and the lawn chairs.

With all the parallels between H50 and Supernatural this year, I was hoping you'd pair a cap of this scene with a cap of Steve and Danny clinking beer bottles in Steve's yard in the pilot. That's all I could think of the whole time.

TemporaryFlatTop!Sammy kind of looks like a hedgehog at this point.

I've had a couple of WIP pics that ended up looking rather unfortunate in ways I didn't see until after I'd posted them. I have one of Ichabod Crane from Sleepy Hollow where I stitched one leg and the bit of coat showing between his legs, but didn't have time to start the second leg. That bit of coat out of context wound up looking unintentionally suggestive.

My favourite part of the ep was at the beginning, when Sam and Dean were just shooting the shit. (The sunglasses, though. They looked like two old grumpy men) This was the first episode ever that I couldn't wathc all the way through. (and yes I sat through Kate painfully slow diagloue, hoping it would get better...*sigh*)I advised the person who got me into the show to skip this episode. It added nothing to the story, and was horribly ooc. I didn't mind the Demon!Dean storyline (though it has it flaws as well, but it seems that the writers have completely run out of ideas.

And I love my bb Cas, but for Chuck's sake - give him an interesting story with the boys, or let him go. The writers have no idea how to handle his character, and it's ruining him. I will keep watching, but I think the pain I'm putting myself through now is different than the pain of seasons 1-5.

I don't understand. I know there are good shows on the CW right now. What happened to spn? Did it become too mainstream?

I think maybe it's just a victim of its own longevity. I don't think many of the original writers or directors are left.

Yeah, it's sad when that happens. I've been following Gotham, and it was very slow at first, but it started to pick up with an episode written by Ben Edlund. His style fits the show really well, and I feel like the following episodes have been taking cues from his.
