Kripke finally answered my question...sort of.
About a year ago, some site or another was collecting fan questions for an interview with Kripke. I asked whether, now that the show had done vampire and werewolf episodes, there were any plans to do a mummy episode to complete the classic horror movie monster trifecta. He didn't answer me then. I guess he did tonight.
This episode was a fun callback to the movies I grew up watching as part of the "Monster Matinee" or "Creature Feature" on the UHF channels on weekend afternoons. Also, our local ABC affiliate used to run movies like this on weekday afternoons as "The ABC 3:30 Movie" back before newscasts started at 4:30. I saw more King Kong, Mothra, Godzilla, Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolfman, mummy, and zombie movies than any one person probably should. The whole crew did a great job duplicating the lighting, sound and camera effects, incidental music, and plot clichés from that era. Even the opening credits looked like the ones from every monster movie of the time.
One of the bad things about adhering so closely to classic monster movies was that as soon as "Dracula" called Jamie "Mina (Murray)" and Dean "(Jonathan) Harker," I knew the shapeshifter was Lucy (Westenra), because I not only saw the movies, I also read the book.
The character of Jamie made a nice departure from the movie heroines from those days, though. When cornered by "Dracula," she screamed...and then maced him in the face. She even managed to run without falling and spraining an ankle, and she was the one who killed the shapeshifter in the end.
It was a nice break from the heavy mythology episodes. Even Dean thought the case was more like "the good old days," back when they used to hunt supernatural things and kill them, no muss, no fuss. I think Sam needs to give Dean more crap about the lederhosen, though. You know Dean would never have let Sam live it down if their positions had been reversed.
The one scene that touched on the ongoing mythology was interesting just for hearing Dean say that he has a renewed motivation for hunting since he came back from hell. He was feeling burned out for so long that it's nice to know he's not quite feeling the weight of the world like he did before. Maybe someday we'll get to hear how Dean's death and resurrection have affected Sam's attitude about hunting.

Date: 2008-10-17 10:43 am (UTC)From:Yeah, Sam so needed to get his camera phone out with the lederhosen! Interestingly, that's not a great look for Jensen.
With all the funny in the episode, thanks for reminding me of Dean's talk to Jamie. As he was doing so, in my mind I was thinking, in the past, this would have been part of his "get you into bed" speech. But this time it was sincere. Really sweet.
And Sam got to kick the door in this time! Sort of. Hee!
