I hate it when shows don't name their episodes. I can never keep the numbers straight.

Anyway, I hate to judge a show by its pilot because I've seen a lot of bad shows with good pilots and a lot of good shows with bad pilots, but so far Primeval is a lot of fun.

A rift in time has opened up in the Forest of Dean leading back to the prehistoric era. Several dinosaurs have found their way through the rift into the forest, leading the tabloids to publish articles about monsters in the woods.

The main characters who find their way into the forest investigating these reports are Prof. Nick Cutter (evolutionary scientist), the snarky leader with a tragic tie to events (his wife and fellow scientist, Helen, disappeared in the Forest of Dean 8 years before while investigating similar reports); Stephen Hart, Cutter's lab technician and Jack of all trades who is also the action hero of the team (he's Race Bannon to Cutter's Dr. Benton Quest); Connor Temple, one of Cutter's students (and part-time comic relief) who is working on his doctoral thesis; Abby Maitland, a local zoologist and expert on lizards; and Claudia Brown, Home Office representative (because apparently dinosaur invasions are a threat to national security...or something).

By the end of the episode, they discover that the rift isn't stable. It comes and goes, and no one knows when or where it'll turn up next (but I suspect we'll find out next week).

One of the things I liked most about the show is that it didn't go for the gore. It easily could have, what with giant prehistoric predators on the loose, but the show mostly went for creepy imagery: a dead cow up in the branches of a tree, a giant footprint in the woods, the steaming up of a window long before you see the dinosaur breathing on it, and that sort of thing.

The characters were likeable, and there was a decent mix of humor, action, and suspense, although some of the humor bits seemed a little out of place at times.

The only fly in the ointment was when the largest carnivorous dinosaur attacked the investigation team out in the forest. Everybody had to run for it, but guess who falls and sprains her ankle? Claudia. Okay, I don't expect a junior government desk jockey to be an Olympic track star or anything, but come on, it's the 21st century. Women have reached the evolutionary point where we can run more than three steps without falling and twisting an ankle. It's time to retire this particular cliché.

Overall, I really enjoyed the episode, and I hope the rest of the series is this much fun.

After being disappointed in a lot of BBC America series lately (Doctor Who, Torchwood, and Robin Hood to name a few), I was totally prepared to be 'meh' about this series. I was really surprised by how much I liked it. I just hope it doesn't turn out to be one of those bad series that has a flukishly good pilot.

I agree. Robin Hood Series 2 sorta disappointed me. I've been hoping something new on BBCA would interest me.

That show Skins looks interesting, too.

Robin Hood lost me in series 1 when the focus changed from Robin and Much's friendship with a side order of Merry Men and Marion to Robin and Marion with a side order of Merry Men and Much as the occasional comic relief. I really hate the Marion on this show. She makes me miss Judi Trott from Robin of Sherwood.

I found myself comparing the two *all* the time....

I've seen all of season 2 and none of season 1 so I don't have as much of the back story as I should. I enjoyed season 2 mostly because I didn't take it too seriously or expect too much. (Traditional tropes turn up quite regularly.) The plot managed to surprise me a number of times so it does have that in it's favour and I do love seeing what creatures they can come up with.

The writing is certainly leagues better than any other genre shows I've seen on BBCA lately.

Never fear. I heard that Skiffy picked it up. I don't know when they'll run it, but they should eventually.
