I hate it when shows don't name their episodes. I can never keep the numbers straight.
Anyway, I hate to judge a show by its pilot because I've seen a lot of bad shows with good pilots and a lot of good shows with bad pilots, but so far Primeval is a lot of fun.
A rift in time has opened up in the Forest of Dean leading back to the prehistoric era. Several dinosaurs have found their way through the rift into the forest, leading the tabloids to publish articles about monsters in the woods.
The main characters who find their way into the forest investigating these reports are Prof. Nick Cutter (evolutionary scientist), the snarky leader with a tragic tie to events (his wife and fellow scientist, Helen, disappeared in the Forest of Dean 8 years before while investigating similar reports); Stephen Hart, Cutter's lab technician and Jack of all trades who is also the action hero of the team (he's Race Bannon to Cutter's Dr. Benton Quest); Connor Temple, one of Cutter's students (and part-time comic relief) who is working on his doctoral thesis; Abby Maitland, a local zoologist and expert on lizards; and Claudia Brown, Home Office representative (because apparently dinosaur invasions are a threat to national security...or something).
By the end of the episode, they discover that the rift isn't stable. It comes and goes, and no one knows when or where it'll turn up next (but I suspect we'll find out next week).
One of the things I liked most about the show is that it didn't go for the gore. It easily could have, what with giant prehistoric predators on the loose, but the show mostly went for creepy imagery: a dead cow up in the branches of a tree, a giant footprint in the woods, the steaming up of a window long before you see the dinosaur breathing on it, and that sort of thing.
The characters were likeable, and there was a decent mix of humor, action, and suspense, although some of the humor bits seemed a little out of place at times.
The only fly in the ointment was when the largest carnivorous dinosaur attacked the investigation team out in the forest. Everybody had to run for it, but guess who falls and sprains her ankle? Claudia. Okay, I don't expect a junior government desk jockey to be an Olympic track star or anything, but come on, it's the 21st century. Women have reached the evolutionary point where we can run more than three steps without falling and twisting an ankle. It's time to retire this particular cliché.
Overall, I really enjoyed the episode, and I hope the rest of the series is this much fun.
