the_other_sandy: Compass pointing north (Travel)
I usually do the driving, but my car is ailing this year, so my BF took over the driving duties. We left at oh-dark-thirty and managed to squeak into the con hotel 15 minutes before the con started.

Friday is the traditional shopping day for us. Not all dealers are able to travel with a lot of stock, so we like to make sure we grab things we want before they sell out. We hit the main dealer room first, where I did my level best to keep the print zine industry afloat. The haul so far:

Stargate SG-1: Jack's Son 6

Stargate Atlantis: Taking Flight 1 and Taking Flight 2

Supernatural: Back Home Again, Blood Brothers 2, Chaos, Every Possible Way, Hunting Trips 3, Past Present Future, Rooftop Confessions 3, The Storm I Ride, Supernatural Christmas Tales 2, and You'll Thank Me When It's Wednesday

Going Under 1 (a Hard Core Logo/Homicide: Life on the Street crossover)

And I said I wanted to go easy on the zines this year because Spanish class kept me from reading all but 3 of the 28 zines I bought last year. The sad thing is that I still have 2 pre-ordered zines to pick up, so I'm not even done yet. ::headdesk::

We stopped at Wendy's for lunch. The young man behind the counter took one look at my Supernatural Impala T-shirt and said, "Where do you get a shirt like that? I love that show!" Never one to miss a chance to pimp my show, I scribbled down the URL on a piece of scratch paper for him. He was very pleased.

The first panel we attended for the day was Stargate Atlantis Fan Fiction: Characters Turned Into Kids and Critters. SGA fandom brings on the crack!fic like no other, so we had fun talking about our favorite stories. One of the panel mods had made a handout of all her favorites, so I have some reading for later.

The next panel was for the extra special crack that is Ninja Warrior. We talked about why we liked the show, who our favorite contestants were, and how completely insane the obstacles are. There was also some discussion about the cultural differences between Ninja Warrior and shows like American Gladiators.

After dinner, we went to Supernatural: Sam, a Character Study. It started out with a great discussion about Sam, but eventually it kept getting hijacked by the Dean fans in the room and had to be manfully wrestled back on topic by the mods.

BF wanted to phone home and read one of her new zines, so I went to Supernatural H/C Stories by myself. Last year, there was a Shep-whumping panel for SGA that shifted from talking about H/C to talking about favorite H/C fics. People were describing these great fics that they couldn't remember the title or author of, so the panel turned into a giant round of Name That Fic, with half the room furiously scribbling titles and authors on scratch paper. The mods of this panel had attended that panel and had so much fun that they wanted to do something similar for Supernatural. The whole panel was an entire hour of people pimping their favorite fics of various types. One of the mods wrote everything down and will be posting the resulting list of fics on her LJ.

After that, BF and I did a preliminary hall crawl, but most people were at dinner or the competition vids, so we'll have to go around again tomorrow.

Now, it's time to try find our hotel, since we're not staying here at HIS.

I'm having a great time so far.

Good grief! Those Dean!girls are sometimes just a bit too much. (But curious as to how they got off-topic.)

Well, Sam and Dean are pretty much two halves of a whole, so you can't talk about one without talking about the other, but then it would drift from talking about Dean in relation to Sam to just talking about Dean. Then the mods would step in and turn the topic back to Sam, Dean would come up in relation to Sam, and it would start all over again.
