I have very mixed feelings about this episode. On the one hand, it was a fairly well-written exploration of a character experiencing an unusual life-changing event, but on the other hand, it was all about Owen. After the whole meltdown he had over Diane last season, I'm really tired of Owen and his issues.
If this episode had been about any character other than Owen experiencing the same crisis, I probably would've felt sorry for him. As it is, I couldn't bring myself to feel the slightest bit of sympathy over Owen being relegated to tea boy after all the superior, condescending crap he heaped on Ianto last season for being the office tea boy. "I guess the foot's on the other hand now, isn't it, Kramer?" [Airplane! reference]
Then Owen decides to dump his issues all over Tosh, the one person who was standing by him and not treating him any differently. "Why are you here, Tosh?" Because she loves you, dumbass. God alone knows why. At least Owen apologized to her in the end. I admire Tosh's loyalty, but at the same time, I'd like to see her be less of a doormat. It would've pleased me no end if there'd been some yelling, or possibly some slapping, before she forgave him for all the hurtful things he said to her.
Why can't Owen do rescue breathing? If he can talk, then air is passing through his vocal chords, which means he can expand and contract his lungs at will. In fact, he'd probably be the best candidate to do rescue breathing because the air coming out of him would have the same oxygen content as the air going into him, since his lungs wouldn't be processing it at all.
I hope Owen had some Retcon on him for Maggie. It would be deeply ironic if he saved her from jumping, only to have to kill her because of all the top secret information he revealed to her. For an organization that deals with highly classified information, Torchwood certainly is staffed by a bunch of blabbermouths. Owen's hardly the first one to go sharing top secret info with someone who doesn't have clearance to hear it.
I'm sorry to see Martha go. If she can't be on Torchwood, then I wish TPTB would give her a UNIT spin-off show of her own. I really liked her.
