Everybody sing with me.

One of these things is not like the others / One of these things just doesn't belong

I liked the scenes on Atlantis and the scenes at the wake. I liked the scenes with the Replicators. But somehow, it just seemed like one of those plotlines was in the wrong episode.

I'm also glad that the writers are making an effort to showcase all of the characters this season, but I also wish they would spread the character showcase episodes out a bit more. It's starting to seem like a long time since I last saw everyone on Atlantis interacting as a group.

Part I

Sam? You might want to requisition some tact on the next Daedalus run. You seem to be running a little low. Seriously, you don't break the news to someone that their father died while standing in the middle of a public corridor and in front of another person, especially if the someone you're breaking the news to is as pathologically private as John Sheppard.

I loved Rodney stopping by John's quarters to see if he was okay. I really loved that Rodney had requested leave to go to the funeral with John. I was kind of hoping that the scene with Rodney would bracket the episode, so that it ended, maybe not with John wanting to talk, but maybe to just sit quietly with Rodney and have a beer or something.

It's a shame that Rodney couldn't go, but I'm glad Ronon went. It was so cute the way he was hovering in the background wherever John was.

Part II

So John not only has a father he never mentioned, but a brother too. They never said, but I'm guessing Dave was a younger brother.

It was nice to finally get some backstory on John. The Sheppards seem to be loaded, which kind of surprised me. John just doesn't behave like someone who came from money. On the other hand, I can totally see John coming from a family of overachievers. The way he yells at himself in the third person when he thinks he's screwed up ("Way to go, John!") always made me think he was repeating something he'd heard a lot growing up. I would've guessed that John would have an older brother who he was expected to live up to.

I'm glad John went to see his brother at the end, and that Dave was willing to give him a chance. I just wish we'd found out what exactly the issue was that drove such a wedge between John and his family. The black mark in Afghanistan probably didn't go over well with the highly successful Sheppards, but it sounds like the problems started long before John grew up and left home.

Part III

Bates is alive and made a full recovery! Well, that answers that question. I always wondered if he ever came out of that coma.

I totally called Ava as a Replicator early on. I'm glad she didn't turn out to be an enemy, because I kind of liked her. I'm not sure that having her consciousness in a computer is any less of a security risk, but I'm glad they didn't have to kill her. Hopefully, her virtual world will keep her happy for a long time and she won't pop up to cause problems later.

And hey, I got my USRDA of John and Ronon running and shooting. I was starting to run a little low.

I covered alot of your points in my episode notes (http://kimberlyfdr.livejournal.com/309111.html) but I've just gotta say the writers are doing an amazing job this year. I commend all of them! And I didn't realize how much I missed Bates until he showed up and then it was like "where have you been? I missed you!!"

I get the feeling Dave is an older brother. It fits more into the character of Sheppard and how his father rejected him, his older brother had to take up the mantle of the family, both resented him and he was continually rejected.

It does make more sense that way, but then Dave said that John left and Dave had to stay and be Dad's right hand man, which made me think that John was the oldest and bailed, leaving younger Dave with no choice but to fulfill John's duties as first son.

That's the beauty of it, it can work both ways. I love open canon (we had alot of it in SH, so SGA giving us this is awesome)
