Dear Mr. Kripke,

Please choose episode titles that are easier to spell. You have no idea how badly this ep's title is going to be mangled all over the Internet.

Thanks in advance.

Your devoted fan,

Sandy (no, the other one)

We finally get an actual rock song in an episode this season, and it has to be "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" by Poison. Blah. Bonus points for using "I Put a Spell on You" by Screamin' Jay Hawkins, though, and for the boys posing as Detectives Bachman and Turner.

There were quite a few catfights in this ep. The most enjoyable were between Ruby and Dean. I wish Dean would get in Bela's face like that at some point. I had heard there was supposed to be a big reveal about Ruby in this episode, but I'm not sure which reveal it was supposed to be. After the big reveal that Ruby was a demon, finding out that she used to be a human witch was kind of anticlimactic. It was also not a huge surprise that Ruby lied about being able to get Dean out of his deal. To me, the bigger shock was Ruby asking Dean to help her get Sam ready to fight the demon war on his own after Dean dies. I have a feeling that Dean won't really be on board with this plan, but what can he do? Sam will have to survive on his own somehow when the year is up.

Speaking of said deal, Dean already knew that Hell was going to suck, but to find out that demons began life as humans but had all their humanity burned away in the pit puts a whole new spin on things. I think Dean could talk himself into believing that an eternity of pain and suffering was a small price to pay for his brother's life, but now he knows he's eventually going to turn into one of the things they hunt. I'd be interested in seeing Sam and Dean discuss that, since turning evil was Sam's biggest fear last season.

The boys did finally have the conversation about Sam's behavior that's been building all season. Here Dean is, worrying that his brother might not have come back right, and Sam comes out and admits he's trying to be more like his big brother to prepare himself for being on his own when Dean dies.

And Sam surviving after Dean dies may have just gotten tougher, what with the new demon rising to fill the leadership void left by Sam's refusal to lead the demon army. And this new leader doesn't want Sam around as competition. Hmm. This could get really ugly, but on the other hand, it'll be nice to see some of the demon war we've heard a lot about but haven't seen much of yet.

I wish I felt something for the perky suburban witches, but it's possibly a character flaw of mine that I don't have a lot of sympathy for people who make their own problems. I did feel sorry for Lizzie at the end, though. She died trying to do the right thing.

My only real knock against this episode was the big climactic battle, in which two demons and a witch fought to the death, while the Winchesters were pinned to a wall and relegated to being bystanders until the very, very end when Dean stabbed the unnamed demon with Ruby's knife. Situations like that are why much of fandom has been complaining about the new characters. Sam and Dean are competent and capable hunters who've been managing on their own for quite some time, but there have been too many instances this season of Ruby or Bela (especially Ruby) swooping in to save the day. I actually like Ruby, but I still want the boys to save themselves and each other most of the time.

All in all, I liked this episode a whole lot more than I thought I was going to from what I'd heard about it.
