I'm going to try to limit myself to one day a week for memes, otherwise they'll wind up taking over the blog. I'm finding them addictive. Fortunately (or not, as the case may be), I seem to be feeling especially crotchety today, so you have your choice of rants.
I was just out shopping for a Father's Day card (I know, I'd procrastinate if I ever got around to it), and once again, it was a struggle to find a card that didn't contain potty humor. There's always been a few cards like that for every holiday because there's always someone who finds it funny, but the percentage of potty humor cards seems to be steadily creeping up with every holiday. I saw a fart joke card for Easter this year. For Easter. Have the greeting card companies just run out of ideas, or has Western civilization sunk so low that there truly is a market that size for bodily function cards? And for holidays like Easter and Mother's Day?
My father is a huge fan of The Sopranos and has been trying to pimp the show to me for years. I got an email from him this morning raving about the series finale. Yet every description he's ever given me of the show's "merits" leaves me cold. Why would I want to spend an hour a week watching unpleasant people being unpleasant to each other? Fans I know tell me it's because the characters are "flawed" and that flawed characters are more interesting and realistic. I happen to agree, but who says that characters have to be morally bankrupt in order to be considered flawed? I'd much rather watch a character try to do what's right, sometimes succeeding and sometimes failing, sometimes not even being sure what the right thing to do is, but at least trying.
