Look who's finally caught up!
I'm deeply relieved that Show is still capable of doing a clever episode now that Ben Edlund is gone. The rest of this season had given me some doubts, but I really liked this one.
I loved the Masterpiece Theatre opening. Of course Metatron is going to see everything in terms of stories. He did nothing but collect and read them for as long as stories have existed. Stories are his only frame of reference for anything. Sometimes I wonder if he's capable of seeing people, or even angels, as real autonomous beings, rather than just supporting characters in his own story. He certainly doesn't seem to possess anything resembling empathy, but then most angels seem to have that problem to varying degrees.
It was nice to see Gabriel again, even though he wasn't real. Richard Speight seemed to be playing him weirdly flat, though. I wonder if that was deliberate as a clue to the audience that he was Metatron's version of Gabriel and not the real thing, or if Richard was just having a hard time getting back into character after such a long absence. Either way, I kind of hope he really is dead, even though I miss him. I'm getting really tired of dead characters coming back to life on all my shows.
It's such a shame that the angels are still having so much trouble with free will that they can't seem to do anything unless they have someone to follow. Hopefully Castiel will have learned from the last fiasco and will do a better job as leader this time. But if he leads the angels against Metatron and they win, which I hope they do because I'm tired of looking at Metatron's smug face, does that mean Castiel will be in charge of heaven again? Because that didn't work out so well last time either.
