I hate not being able to customize the names of my moods anymore. Stupid LJ and their stupid "improvements."
So, I was officially underwhelmed. I suppose I've gotten too used to my shows giving me a mid-season cliffhanger, or at least a big plot reveal. This could've been any episode. Any mediocre episode with a fantastically annoying kid, anyway. I can see why Steve and Catherine were the ones who mostly interacted with Ethan. Danny would've busted out his dad voice and this would've been a very different episode.
So Catherine is at the end of the World's Longest Leave. It's been, what, three months? When Steve came to sweep her off her feet for a last dinner together, I thought it was a heck of a wasted opportunity that he didn't plop her in Kamekona's chopper and take off. I mean, the man had the Bond tuxedo and a helicopter pilot license. I did find Steve's taste in romantic music (for a "romantic" breakfast eating fast food in his truck) mildly hilarious, though. Danny gets "Sexy Eyes," but Catherine gets eighties hair metal.
Too bad the episode didn't end with Christmas dinner at Casa McGarrett. That would've been...something. I couldn't believe Danny didn't jump all over that invitation (okay, it was more like an order). Who wouldn't want to spend Christmas with Doris?
The high point of the episode was probably George Takei's very short scene. That makes the fourth cast member from Heroes to make an appearance on H50. I'm sad he didn't get a scene with Masi Oka, though, since he played Masi's father on Heroes. H50 is turning into a Heroes vs. Supernatural smackdown to see which of those shows can get more actors on this show.
I hope everyone has a happy holiday season, and I'll see you after the break.

Date: 2012-12-24 04:54 am (UTC)From:That was a severely ok episode. Steve's idea of a "special meal" before Catherine's leave ends was definitely one of the highlights. Not only does she get drive-in breakfast with eighties hair metal for mood music, some moron tries to carjack them, and Steve trades the moron for an annoying kid at the police station. Gosh, he really knows how to show a girl a good time! I hope that they eventually explain how Steve got the nickname "Smooth Dog."
Christmas at the McGarrett's place would have been interesting. Danny, you could feel like a third wheel, spending the holiday with your best friend and his not-a-girlfriend (who is about go back to active duty, which tends to make most couples want to spend time alone). Fortunately, you won't have to worry about that because your best friend's mother -- a woman you get along with almost as well as your ex-wife -- will also be joining the party! How much fun could one man have?

I like all those fics that said "Smooth Dog" was an ironic nickname, like naming a big man "Tiny."

The true measure of how close Steve and Danny are--that Danny would suffer through Christmas with Doris for Steve's sake.
