Was it just me, or did the writers have a checklist for this episode?
Things to do in episode 7:
● Bring back a popular guest character people have been asking for for two years
● Get Max off his cane
● Tell Mary that Doris is still alive
Done!
Not that I'm complaining. I liked Toast. Also it was really stretching plausibility that Max was still using the cane and that Mary still didn't know about Doris when we're this far into the season.
It's kind of a bummer that this episode was so light on character moments after how awesome the last two episodes were. The best part (for us anyway, not so much for Chin) was Chin getting all shaky when Kono was being held hostage. Aside from feeling guilty for sending her there (not that he had any way of knowing that was going to happen), he's clearly still grieving Malia's death and just could not face losing someone else close to him so soon.
Plus, Danny continues his BAMFy ways, Kono teaches special forces douchebags that kidnapping her is a bad idea, and Doris continues to annoy me.
Oh, and P.S., Show, we're totally on to you. You have gone to the 'Five-0 loses one of their own' well one too many times in your teasers. We all know it's going to be a very peripheral character (in this case, a random HPD officer) and no longer get worked up about the possibility of something happening to one of the Core Four. Although after reading the summary in the TV listings about the murder of a hacker, I'm just glad they didn't kill off Toast.

I'd call this ep a solid fluff piece. It was good to see Kono kick ass (though I love that no one questions it from her while jumping on the "prove Cath has training for this!" train in the season opener...), which somewhat made up for the odd twinkly music and she's-a-woman-she-can-reach-the-austistic-boy moments that went with it.

There are just a lot of reasons for a woman to know and be good at martially arts kind of stuff, especially one career military, even if she is more of a desk jockey. Self-defense, for a start. I don't see a reason for an explanation. Besides, while we saw Kono's badassery right from the start, she was a professional surfer. How does she know all the moves she does - they don't look like police academy training...
I'll stop now. ;)

Then it shouldn't be too hard for the writers to mention one. We heard about Lori and her love for P.E. class every other episode.

Date: 2012-11-21 12:29 am (UTC)From:Yes, I know. That's why I didn't use quotation marks. I was lumping in the intent of this trailer with the other trailers where they pulled the same shenanigans. They showed the bad guys barging in with guns, Kono with her hands up while we heard all about one of their own getting caught in the crossfire (clearly linking the word "crossfire" to the guys with guns), then Doris crying, all of which was meant to imply that one of the Core Four was going down, either Kono in the raid or Steve trying to save her. Instead (to no one's surprise) it was a random HPD officer.
Whoever edits the H50 trailers does that a lot. In fact, poor random HPD officer was the fourth or fifth peripheral character to die after the trailer heavily implied something bad would happen to a member of the Core Four instead. And that doesn't include the carefully edited trailer implying the fake tsunami was real.
So, yes, I am totally on to the editing hijinks and am not falling for it.

Date: 2012-11-25 08:33 pm (UTC)From:I'm glad that Steve and Doris finally told Mary that her mother is still alive. Judging by Doris' reaction to Mary, either Mary gave the emotional reaction Doris wanted from Steve or Doris is finally figuring out how her "death" affected her family (or Mary was always Doris' favorite). I'm betting on the first and/or third, but that's based on the firm belief that Doris is a Grade-A schmuck.
I loved watching Kono take down the bad guy. More team interaction would have been nice, but it was very cool to have a little Kono focus and BAMFery. Also, Chin did a great job making his feelings obvious and understated at the same time.

Date: 2012-11-25 08:46 pm (UTC)From:I'm leaning toward the first. To me, Doris is all about Doris. Ever since she came out of hiding, Doris has been looking for someone to give her a trophy for her sacrifice in leaving her family. Steve didn't give her one. Neither did Danny. So Doris figures she's got another shot with Mary. But then Mary didn't want to see her, so Doris decided to hunt her down instead. At the end, Mary shows up and cries all over Doris, and Doris finally gets the reaction she's been looking for since she came back. I doubt that will make her any less of a pill in future episodes.
