Goodness, I actually went out and did something for once and I totally forgot to post about it.
Last Sunday, John Scalzi made an appearance at my library to support his new book, Redshirts. Scalzi didn't do a reading from Redshirts on the theory that we're all capable of reading ourselves and nothing would be gained by him reading it to us, so instead he read two snippets from other works we've all been sworn to secrecy not to discuss (there was an oath and a code phrase and everything--it was hilarious), and he also performed a sketch with Mary Robinette Kowal based on Redshirts, where he was a senior officer for the Universal Union and she was an attorney representing the redshirts in a class action lawsuit. I especially liked the diatribe about crew losses due to exploding control panels and how surely the Universal Union could afford a few fuses. During the Q&A session afterward, he spent a good chunk of time answering my question about how he came to be involved in SGU. Scalzi was great fun as a speaker. He also signed my book (in red Sharpie, of course) and complimented me on my Miskatonic University Dept. of Library Sciences T-shirt.
