Today is the first day of MediaWest, and for the first time since 1999, I'm not there. Part of me is sad, but mostly that's because I miss the way it used to be, not because I feel I'm missing out on anything now.

I need to find a new con.

I miss fan cons. I think my last one was Escapade 2002. (I don't count the New York Comic Cons I've been to in the past year because NYCC has a totally different vibe.)

Yeah, I don't count the Creation celebrity circuses as cons either. They're not the same thing at all. I remember one year when some actor's fan club raised money to pay him to attend MediaWest and sign autographs. People were pissed at the intrusion into fanspace (the actor, however, had a great time and came back the following year as a regular attendee).

MediaWest was my favorite con ever. If someone could have pulled the idea of the perfect con out of my head, MediaWest was it. I used to tear up on the last day because the con was over and I didn't want to go home. Now it's become a shadow of its former self and I really don't think it's ever going to recover.

It turns out I need to go back one more time though. I forgot I have stuff at the orphan zine table I need to get back.

Missing you. It's pretty much a standard MediaWest. Everyone seems to be having a good time. Sherlock is the fandom du jour, but Supernatural is still hanging on.

I wasn't really feeling bad about missing the con until I started seeing con posts. How dare people go and have fun without me? ;-) Now that I've remembered I have stuff at the orphan zine table, I'll have to attend next year at least to get it all back.

And I would love to talk series 2 Sherlock, but the Sherlock panels last year were so crowded and full of people talking at once that I couldn't follow any of the discussions.
