I have my fingers crossed that this bodes well for the rest of the season.
That was a dirty rotten trick, making us think Steve was coding for the first 15 minutes of the ep. I could just see all the whump fic writers firing up their keyboards to write a massively whumpy coda to tonight's ep, only to deflate with disappointment when it turned out to be the douchenozzle rapist/murderer Dmitri who was coding instead.
It was nice to see Steve being impressed by Danny for a change, first with the awesome takedown, and then with Danny's Russian skills. But of course Danny's Russian skills had to be limited to only two phrases because the only thing Danny is allowed to be more awesome at than the rest of Five-0 is parenting. It was also nice to see Chin be able to get his badass on for the first time in too long.
I knew Lori was crushing on Steve. She's always reacted more like a girlfriend than a teammate when Steve was in danger. I just can't figure out if Steve never noticed or if he was deliberately ignoring it because he still has a thing for Catherine. Either way, I hope Lori's resignation means we can spend the rest of the season with the original Fab Four now. Joe and Lori really disrupted the ohana vibe that I loved so much in the first season. But at least we now have a canon explanation for Lori's failure to be the governor's eyes and ears, as opposed to having to assume the writers forgot all about it, which personally I think they did.
But Lori couldn't leave without pissing me off one more time by outbidding Danny on those football tickets and then giving them to Steve. Steve didn't even want them; he was just competing with Danny. Danny was the one who actually wanted to go to the games. All I can say is that Steve better be taking Danny to at least some of those games with the second ticket in each pair.
Denning also pissed me off when he was smugly telling the Russian consul not to act before he got all his facts straight, because it's not like Denning hadn't just spent the previous two hours busting Five-0's balls before he got his facts straight. Asshat.
Here's hoping the rest of the season holds much character development in store for the actual main characters.

Date: 2012-02-14 06:33 am (UTC)From:Personally there is no doubt in my mind that the writers just flat out ignored the being the governor's spy bit and the 'explanation' is very much after the fact. Regardless of the reason, though, I'm just glad we're ready to move on.
I hear you on the ticket annoyance, too, but I'm just going to imagine Steve and Danny going to quite a few of those games together. =)

Date: 2012-02-20 02:55 am (UTC)From:Snerk. I was all "Yay! Danny is showing hidden depths! He's not only becoming the master of the stylish takedown, he also speaks Russian." Two minutes later, he's back to just awesome takedowns again.
I get that the team wanted to get the scumbag fast, but was this really the best idea they could find? There was no way that plan could have not caused an international incident. Steve and Kono may have thought it sounded like a great plan, but Chin and Danny should have been able to point out a few tiny problems. Sorry -- Denning's a jerk, but 5-0 messed up big time on this one.
