the_other_sandy: Nothing like a bit of drama to clear the sinuses (Ranty)
I can't believe I haven't posted since Tuesday. Believe it or not, I'm still trying to catch up on my flist from when I was at Kazcon.

Borders sent me a 20% off coupon today, so I decided to use it to buy the first Supernatural tie-in novel, Nevermore. But first, I wanted to make sure I went to a store that wasn't sold out of it, so I went to the Borders website to do an inventory search of the Borders stores near me. A keyword title search for "Nevermore" returned no hits. An author search of "DeCandido, Keith" returned 3 pages of hits, none of which were Nevermore. I finally had to resort to a keyword search for "Supernatural." In amongst the entirely too many hits was a book called "Supernatural #1" by Keith Candido. ::headdesk::

Anyway, I now knew that the Borders by my home didn't have it, but the Borders by work did, so that's where I headed after work. The Borders computer said it was in Science Fiction/Fantasy, so that's where I went. It wasn't shelved under DeCandido, Candido, Supernatural, or in that TV tie-in section at the end. It wasn't on the end of shelf display racks. I finally found it at the back of the table of new paperbacks in a completely different section of the store. But hey, at least I finally had the book. When I took it to the register to pay for it, the employee who took it to ring it up looked at the book, did a double-take, and said, "Where did you find this? We were looking for it all over the place yesterday!"

As a librarian, it makes me sad that Borders is so disorganized that its own staff can't find anything in the store. I wouldn't have found it either if I weren't a cataloger and very familiar with all the ways people can screw up an index or organizational system.

As a fan, it makes me sad that Nevermore lost out on a sale because Borders' employees can't find anything in their own freaking store. Really, I shouldn't have to jump through so many hoops to give a business my money.

My experience is that Borders stores vary wildly. One near me has great, extensive stock and puts out newest releases quickly. Another one still had Saiyuki Reload vol. 7 sitting in its back room four days after Tokyopop's official release date, while I saw it in a Barnes & Noble two days earlier. (I too had a Borders coupon, so I wanted to buy it there. I found out about the back room because I asked an employee for the book.)

Thus, it doesn't surprise me to hear of a Borders where they couldn't find their own asses with both hands.
