I can't believe I haven't posted since Tuesday. Believe it or not, I'm still trying to catch up on my flist from when I was at Kazcon.
Borders sent me a 20% off coupon today, so I decided to use it to buy the first Supernatural tie-in novel, Nevermore. But first, I wanted to make sure I went to a store that wasn't sold out of it, so I went to the Borders website to do an inventory search of the Borders stores near me. A keyword title search for "Nevermore" returned no hits. An author search of "DeCandido, Keith" returned 3 pages of hits, none of which were Nevermore. I finally had to resort to a keyword search for "Supernatural." In amongst the entirely too many hits was a book called "Supernatural #1" by Keith Candido. ::headdesk::
Anyway, I now knew that the Borders by my home didn't have it, but the Borders by work did, so that's where I headed after work. The Borders computer said it was in Science Fiction/Fantasy, so that's where I went. It wasn't shelved under DeCandido, Candido, Supernatural, or in that TV tie-in section at the end. It wasn't on the end of shelf display racks. I finally found it at the back of the table of new paperbacks in a completely different section of the store. But hey, at least I finally had the book. When I took it to the register to pay for it, the employee who took it to ring it up looked at the book, did a double-take, and said, "Where did you find this? We were looking for it all over the place yesterday!"
As a librarian, it makes me sad that Borders is so disorganized that its own staff can't find anything in the store. I wouldn't have found it either if I weren't a cataloger and very familiar with all the ways people can screw up an index or organizational system.
As a fan, it makes me sad that Nevermore lost out on a sale because Borders' employees can't find anything in their own freaking store. Really, I shouldn't have to jump through so many hoops to give a business my money.
