Since last Thursday, my kitchen sink has backed up, my cable has gone out for four days causing me to miss Supernatural (which I still haven't seen, so no spoilers please), my car has malfunctioned in a replace-it-not-repair-it kind of way, my toilet has backed up, and the towel rack in my bathroom has come flying off the wall and nearly hit me in the face. Three of those five things happened to me today.
Which is by way of saying that I can't think of a better time to be getting my H50 squee on.
The Danny-whumping was lovely, but he recovered too quickly. After he got to the hospital, we didn't see him until he was basically fine again. There should have been more whumping.
On the other hand, the Steve bits were awesome. He ran half the investigation from the hospital until he was sure Danny was okay and Grace was taken care of (it's now canon that Grace calls Steve "Uncle Steve"!). And I loved that huge wordless conversation Steve and Danny had over a sleeping Rachel. But boo to Sang Min for busting up the first Steve/Danny hug ever.
Danny having much of the episode off meant we got a lot of Jenna Kaye instead. I like her when she's compiling information and doing analyst things, but she still comes across like a snotty teenager in the field. If TPTB do add her to the cast next season, I think the way to do it without annoying me is to have her stay back at HQ with Chin's Computer Table of Awesome to run the background checks and compile lists and all the things Chin and Kono normally do, which would then free up Chin and Kono to be all BAMFy in the field, which they are better at than Jenna (and the award for World's Longest Sentence goes to...).
I can't say I'm surprised that Stan and Rachel's marriage is on the rocks already, and I'm glad that Danny and Rachel aren't at each other's throats anymore, but I don't think I want them getting back together. All the issues that killed their marriage in the first place are still there, only multiplied by eleventy because Five-0 is way more dangerous than being a Jersey cop was.
And I kept waiting for Rachel to crash into something while staring at Danny in her side-view mirror as she drove away.
I'm not sure how much I believe Sang Min's story. Wo Fat didn't strike me as (a) the kind of guy who makes direct threats, or (b) the kind of guy who would share his future plans with a flunky he's going to kill. But maybe I'm wrong and he's really the "before I kill you, Mister Bond" type. I still think he needs a cat.
You know what I really liked? Internal Affairs not being stupid enough to fall for Chin's ploy. Usually when you see IA in a show, the investigators are all morons. It was nice to see competent IA investigators for once, even if they were still hosing the good guys' plans.
And finally, I think Danny has been rubbing off on Kono, what with her cutting off a fleeing suspect and taking him down with a trash can lid to the face; and I think Steve has been rubbing off on Grace with her concerns about fat and cholesterol. Somehow I don't think she got her objections to fried chicken from her father.
Looking forward to the season finale (except for the part where it will be followed by a long hiatus).

More Danny-whumping on screen would have been nice, although watching him trying to do his job from the hospital bed wasn't bad. Danny and Steve had some good scenes at the hospital and HQ. Steve asking for a hug was sweet. (Jenna asking for a hug made her look like someone's tag-along little sister.)
I really, really hope that TPTB stop trying to put Rachel and Danny back together. How does "starting something with your ex-wife while her current marriage is failing" sound like a good idea?? Not only are all the old problems with his job still problems, they're also in Hawaii where everything is stupidly expensive. Unless Rachel's job is bankrolling that McMansion or she gets amazing alimony from Stan, they're going to end up sharing the fold-away in Danny's roach motel. Of course, if Rachel and Stan break up and she doesn't get back together with Danny, she won't have a lot of reason to stay in Hawaii. Sigh.
IA being too smart to fall for Chin's ploy was good. I hope he can buy his house back from the loan shark, but I'm not holding my breath on that.
Kono whapping the fleeing suspect with a trash can lid was beautiful.
Overall, it was a good episode, but I can see why it doesn't seem to be inspiring as much fan-fic as the epic heart episode did (Ma Ke Kahakai). Unless next week is pretty amazing, I suspect a lot of people are going to be ignoring or working around the Rachel relationship during the hiatus.

Date: 2011-05-11 03:33 am (UTC)From:And my personal theory is that Danny can afford a better apartment. He can't be making any less money than Chin and Kono, and they don't live in dumps. Kono could afford her place while she was still in the police academy, and Chin could afford his on his security guard salary. I think Danny just booked the first place he found and just couldn't be bothered to move again afterward. He may love Grace and may have been willing to make the move just for her, but I don't think his heart was committed to Hawaii. Needing space for himself, Rachel, and Grace would probably motivate him enough to look for a batter place.

Nothing keeps slashers down, except maybe one of the characters becoming an irredeemable jerk (I'm looking at you, Dylan Hunt). If the McSheppers can work around Rodney's two long-term girlfriends (in canon, Rodney even asked John's opinion of the engagement ring Rodney bought to propose to Katie Brown), they can work around Rachel. Heck, even if Danny remarries her, they can work around Rachel. They're creative like that.
I'm hoping the lack of episode fic means that people are writing long, plotty fic instead of instafics. I can dream.

Mmmmm -- long, plotty fic would be nice. As would having enough time to read it. ;>

I know, right? I was expecting the same thing.
My husband's bizarro prediction re: Jenna: They're going to kill off Kono and replace her with Jenna. I tried to throttle him, and he said hey, it was a prediction, not a wish...

Date: 2011-05-12 12:16 am (UTC)From:Actually, a lot of people have been predicting that. My prediction is that Governor Immunity and Means is going to be replaced by Governor You Did What?! and Steve (and the rest of Five-0) will have to learn to tread more carefully (or creatively).
