I had planned to post my con reports at the end of each day, but I'm on Day 12 of the galloping crud my coworker gave me. I'm feeling a lot better than I was, but I tend to fall asleep if I stop moving for any length of time, which is where large chunks of Sunday and today disappeared to.
Saturday
Saturday started out with a panel on Sam and Dean's journey and how they got to where they are now in season six, then we had our annual script-to-screen panel. We assign parts to everyone and read one act of an episode script, then watch that act on DVD to compare differences between the script and the actual aired episode. There weren't too many differences between the script and the filmed episode for "Like a Virgin," but the scriptwriter (Adam Glass) had some really interesting asides and commentary in the script itself that were fun to read, like "Sam PULLS DEAN right into A HUG. An 'OMG, Back From Hell!' SEASON OPENER HUG. Especially on Sam's side: it's the emotional moment we didn't get in 601 when he had no soul."
After lunch, we watched the first two dubbed episodes of the Supernatural anime series. It was kind of weird to watch the bare bones of an episode you knew suddenly take a sharp left into new territory. The dubbing was kind of odd too. Jared sounded great, but he apparently recorded his dialogue without being able to see the video, so his recorded voice didn't match the lip flaps of his character at all, which was unfortunate. That was followed by a panel on the origin of the various signs and symbols used throughout the show.
My favorite panel of the weekend was on lockpicking as it was depicted in the show, and what was realistic and what wasn't (you can open handcuffs with a paperclip, but not with a car antenna). It was supposed to have been presented by The Open Organization of Lockpickers, but apparently the Chicago chapter recently disbanded. They were kind enough to loan us their presentation materials though, and two members of the con comm were able to give the panel. Then we got to play with actual locks and picks. I sucked at the handcuffs and padlocks, but I was able to pick a 5-pin tumbler. I still have a pair of handcuffs from my pre-librarian days as a security guard, so I plan to keep practicing on those.
After dinner, we had an introduction to role-playing games in general and the Supernatural RPG specifically. (Why are so many people who live near me playing this game and not inviting me? ::pouts::) The evening finished off with Misha Collins's cinematic masterpiece Stonehenge Apocalypse, which also featured Peter Wingfield (Highlander), Torri Higginson (Stargate: Atlantis), Brent Stait (Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda), and some of the worst fake British accents I've ever heard.
Sunday
One of our members,
lily_cat, actually works as a make-up artist in Los Angeles and held a panel on the make-up effects on the show. She did the sigil burned into Sam's arm in "Born Under a Bad Sign," the palm print burned into Dean's shoulder in "Lazarus Rising," and Dean's beaten bloody face in "Swan Song."
agent_jl36, the volunteer for Dean's beaten face, left the room to get cleaned up and scared several people in the lobby who wanted to know if she needed them to call 911 for her. That was followed by a panel on popular TV tropes used on Supernatural, and one on the possible mythological origins of The Mother of All and where the show could be going depending on which myth they're using.
This was followed by a spoiler panel that I skipped, a final discussion of what we want to see happen before the season finale (I'm hoping for a bitch/jerk exchange), the annual raffle (I won a season five DVD set), and the annual group photo (this one taken in front of
lily_cat's 1967 Chevy Impala--yes, it's black with 4 doors).
As usual, I had a fabulous time even if I did spend most of the con sitting by myself in the back so as not to contaminate anyone else with my death plague. Here's hoping there will be a season 7 just so there will be a WinchestMidwest 6.
