I can see how TPTB would want to front load the comedy episodes in the first half of the season so as not to lose momentum with the heavy-duty mythology episodes in the second half, but honestly? I'm ready for a comedy episode, even if it's not all that funny. The show's just making my stomach hurt right now.

Characters on the show keep telling us that demons lie, but they rarely seem to unless they're actively manipulating someone into doing something. For the most part, demons seem to prefer stating painful truths to lying. Maybe hunters tell each other and themselves that demons lie because it's easier to deny those truths than deal with them. On the other hand, if hunters spent more time dealing with their issues instead of boxing them up and pretending they don't exist, the demons' words wouldn't be as painful and both the demons and their words would lose their power. I'm just sayin'. I think some of the hunters should send their kids to school to become psychologists so that hunters have a way to deal with their lives that doesn't involve booze or denial.

All that is by way of saying that I believe Alastair that John was intended to break the first seal and start the apocalypse rolling, but John was too stubborn to break so the demons had to go with Plan B, namely Dean (I guess Sam doesn't count as a righteous man because of the demon blood). Part of me finds it completely implausible that John could (a) not break under 100 years of torture, and (b) claw his way out of the pit after all that still capable of smiling lovingly at his sons in "All Hell Breaks Loose 2," but on the other hand, John Winchester was inhumanly stubborn so if anybody could resist a century of torture out of sheer spite, it would be him. Still, it did confirm Dean's conviction that his dad didn't break while he did, which was not what Dean needed to hear in his current state of mental health.

I'm not sure if it's better or worse that Sam is boosting his powers by drinking Ruby's blood instead of by having sex with her. Both make me squirm. Judging from the expression on Ruby's face, I get the idea that she never gave up on her original plan to be sitting at Sam's side when he became the demon Boy King. She just needed to spend a lot of time nudging him in that direction because he has all the requirements necessary to enter the demon club except the personality. The demon blood seems to be working on that, though. Sam seems to get meaner after a hit, which perversely makes me feel better. That means there's still hope that his true nature is salvageable if he just gets off the demon blood. Maybe that can be Sam's storyline next season--fighting the addiction to stay true to himself.

I may be a little sorry that Alastair is dead. But only a little. I love Christopher Heyerdahl (I see him in lots of things on SciFi Syfy), but I won't miss Alastair's annoying voice.

Uriel may be dead (and the silhouette of wings burned into the ground next to the dead angels was a nice touch), but he said he'd already converted other angels so that's going to make the remainder of the war a challenge. There'll be no telling who's on which side anymore, at least not easily. The Winchesters can pretty much count on Castiel, Anna, and Bobby, but anybody else could be fighting on either side.

My big question now is that if Dean is the only one who can stop the apocalypse because he broke the first seal, where does that leave Sam and his story? If I've sat through four seasons of Sam being a special kid with demon blood for nothing, I'll be mightily peeved. Maybe Sam will have to stop the demons while Dean stops the rogue angels? Or vice versa? There better be something, that's all I'm sayin'. And neither of the boys had better die. Three seasons in a row ending that way would just be too much.

The show is losing me--has been since the stripper episode--but this episode further accelerated it. The boys don't really seem to care for each other much anymore; Dean thinks Sam is untrustworthy and corrupt, while Sam thinks Dean is weak and an obstacle. I no longer get the impression that they do the "family business" to save people anymore as much as to distract themselves from their huge personal issues.

I'm waiting for fandom's reaction to Uriel being the traitor.

That's what I see as the result of the demon blood at work, so I have hope that it'll work itself out in the end. I had less hope when it just seemed like Sam was changing due to everything he's been through lately. I'm starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel. I just hope it's not a train.

And to be honest, they probably don't know what else to do with themselves. It's pretty much all they know.

It certainly will complicate things, depending on how many angels he converted and how many angels they converted.

I don't know if I trust the show enough to have the demon blood be the only thing behind it and thus be soon solvable.
