Call me a marshmallow, but I really don't like it when Sam and Dean are at odds with each other. I hated the hiatus after "Asylum." Even though the action in "Scarecrow" picked up immediately from the end of "Asylum," it still felt like the boys hadn't been getting along with each other for months. The break after "Sex and Violence" was much shorter, but the stakes were higher and I'm more invested in the characters now than I was three years ago. For the twenty minutes or so before the show started, I had the fluttery stomach/shaky hands kind of dread that I normally only experience before dentist appointments.

It turns out my dread wasn't wholly unjustified. Just like after "Asylum," Dean didn't actually forgive Sam after Sam apologized, even though he said he did. At least by the end of "Scarecrow" they'd forgiven each other, but not this time. Sam is still lying to Dean about using his powers because he's tired of having confrontations with Dean about it, yet now he just winds up having confrontations with Dean about the lying. I don't know why they even bother. They're both such crappy liars these days that they can't even fool strangers, let alone each other.

I can't decide if I like this turn in their relationship or not. Yes, the Js are taking the material and knocking it out of the park, but I still prefer it when Sam and Dean are getting along. Whether I wind up liking this story arc or not is probably going to depend on how it ends. Then I'll be able to look back on the whole long journey and appreciate it (or not, depending), but in the meantime the rift between them is really painful to watch and not in the good way. I just hope that this isn't one of those storylines Kripke wants to stretch out to season five. I don't think I could take another whole season of brotherly strife.

As you can probably guess, my favorite part of the episode was when the spectral Winchesters tag-teamed Alastair's assistant, and again when they joined forces to bring down the chandelier to break the circle and free Tessa.

Sam continues to get scarier as his powers grow. Fortunately, he's still using them exclusively on demons, but we didn't see the hosts post-exorcism this time. Sam's exorcisms have gotten more forceful with his increase in ability; I just hope they haven't become too traumatic for the hosts to survive.

Dean seems to be getting darker too, especially with his continued exposure to Alastair. Dean has always said that nothing could make him kill Sam and that he'd rather die first, but I wonder if the path he's on now is taking him to a place where he could kill Sam if he had to. And if maybe that was part of a greater plan all along.

Speaking of Alastair, I was really hoping that the loss of the pediatrician host would mean the end of that incredibly annoying Marlon Brando meets Truman Capote voice he has, but no. Even though the cemetery host didn't sound that bad to me, the new(est) host matched it perfectly. That's the blessing and curse of Alastair being played by Christopher Heyerdahl now. He's a brilliant actor and I'm a big fan, but wow that voice is irritating.

I'd heard that Jeremy Carver and Sera Gamble were going to do a swap in that Carver was going to write a serious episode, while Gamble was going to write a comedic one. I guess Carver took that to heart. It's normally Gamble who kills off the recurring characters in her episodes. I'm going to miss Pam.

If I had written a review of this episode, I was going to title it "Jeremy Carver is the new Sera Gamble."

I realized how dark the show has gotten when the boys were first spirits. It was so much fun seeing them light hearted, if just for a little while.

I didn't catch everything Pam said to Sam before she died. Do you remember what it was?

I don't remember the exact quote, but it was something along the lines of, 'I know you think you're doing this with good intentions, but you're not.'

I wonder if after every angsty D/S scene, J/J hug it out. Me hopes so.

Thank Kripke he didn't follow the other SG rule of Sam smexing. No Nuby = good eppy.

Nuby? I hadn't heard that one before.

Instead of new Ruby. It's silly.

Makes sense, though. Especially when we're up to 4 actresses who have played Ruby.

I'm still deeply annoyed that neither of them felt any urge to try to save Pam. Pressure on the wound, 911, something? Yes, you all read the script but this makes you look cold-hearted and stupid.

Hey, Sam tried. She's the one who insisted it was a terminal injury, and considering how fast she died, she was probably right.

Because people who are stabbed intimately know just how serious a wound they've received? I wanted at least effort. Instead, it seemed to me that this happened because the script said it did. It didn't sell me on it.

It probably doesn't help that in this episode and the stripper ep I've really been hating the boys.

I just hope the whole character arc for Sam and Dean ends in a payoff I can live with.

Ditto. Because if things continue on like this indefinitely the show may lose me.

That's my biggest fear now that the show has been officially given a fifth season. I don't want another whole season of the boys at odds with each other. One was enough.

Wow, this is really really interesting. I hadn't thought of this angle but it really makes a lot of sense!

Thanks for giving me this idea! It's briliant!

Thanks! Dean just started looking to me like he was going down a dark path parallel to Sam's but not the same one.
