You know the cute little lanyard we got with our badges? In addition to the skulls and crossbones on one side, it also has little Impala silhouettes on the other side. How did I not notice this? ::headdesk::
Today started with a presentation on Supernatural fandom, LJ communities and Yahoo!Groups to join, and places to find info on the Internet. We also giggled at some of the wank, and
samazon13, who is a feminist activist, did a presentation on misogyny in the show that was very interesting. One thing I hadn't noticed until she pointed it out was that the show has never used any classic rock songs by women. One could definitely argue that there are fewer classic rock bands with female vocalists, but there are still some out there. I'd love to find out that Dean had a crush on Joan Jett at some point.
The second panel was a general discussion on what people wanted to see for season 4. We talked about what might possibly be revealed about Mary, what we wanted to see regarding Sam's powers, and what the future holds for Dean. In regard to Kripke wanting to expand the hunting universe with recurring characters, someone brought up the idea of having one of the female characters Sam and Dean rescued in season 1 turn up again in season 4 as a hunter. I thought that was an awesome idea. Isn't that how most hunters got started, by having a supernatural tragedy touch their lives? This was the last panel before lunch, so the mod kindly held up the spoiler portion until the end of the panel so that anyone who wanted to stay spoiler free could just head out to lunch early without missing anything. I thought that was cool. This whole con has been really considerate about handling the spoilers.
After lunch, we were supposed to have a talk from a local ghost hunting group, but they canceled at the last minute, so we looked at some of the ghost hunting tips on their Website, then watched "Ghostfacers."
anteka gave a multimedia documentary presentation on the making of Plastic!Winchester Theater, followed by the "world premiere" of the season 3 finale of P!WT. You really had to have seen previous episodes, which I haven't, to follow the plot.
anteka does a great job with it, but I can't help it--plastic dolls have always creeped me out, even as a little kid.
The next panel was on the real mythology behind some of the demons on the show. The presenter had done a lot of research, but she was just reading from her PowerPoint slides, so this panel had the least general discussion. At the very end of the discussion on demonology, the lights in the room started flickering. A very short but intense storm blew in, then blew out again in less than 10 minutes. When I went home for dinner, there were branches down all over my neighborhood, and the power had gone out.
The last panel of the afternoon was on fan fic. The mods started out by asking authors where their ideas came from and how they write, but there weren't that many authors in the room so it was expanded out into what people like to read. It wasn't a story reccing panel so much as people talking about what kind of fics they liked to read and why.
After we officially broke for dinner, a group of people stayed behind to keep talking about the show. I'm not terribly assertive about inviting myself into group discussions with people I don't know, so I was just talking to
samazon13, who was sitting next to me today (we recognized each other's online names--it turns out that we're on a Yahoo!Group together, but we'd never met in person). Well,
samazon13 is a lot less shy than I am, and when she went over to join the group, she brought me with her, so 10 of us hung around for an hour during the dinner break to talk.
While we were waiting for things to start up again after dinner, somebody's cell phone went off and had a Supernatural-related ringtone. That led a whole bunch of people to pull out their phones to show off their classic rock ringtones.
We spent the evening watching songvids, both blooper reels, and some stuff that
anteka dug up on YouTube. That's when I had my most surreal moment of the day.
samazon13 was poking around LJ on her laptop and found pictures from the con that someone had already posted. She turned her screen around to show me, so we were looking at pictures of ourselves on the Internet while sitting in the same chairs in the same room we were sitting in in the photos. ::cues Twilight Zone music:: That was just odd.
The night ended with another round of Guitar Hero. People who weren't playing were singing along in a group karaoke.
I was a little worried about attending a con this small (there were maybe 40 people there), but I'm having an awesome time.
