Last fall, I posted a series of wish lists of what I would like to see on each of my shows in the upcoming season. Since Supernatural's season is now over, I thought I'd go back and see how my list fared.
1. Bobby Singer surviving the season
*\0/* The way they like to kill off recurring characters on this show, I had my doubts about Bobby surviving past the season finale, but he's still hanging in there.
2. The storyline about Dean's deal not lasting all season before a resolution
Granted it was a short season due to the strike, but it looks like the TPTB clearly intended all along for Dean's year to be up in the season finale. I can see the point of that, but part of me still feels like they dragged that plot arc on a little too long.
3. More character development for Sam (we don't really know him as well as we know Dean)
I have mixed feelings about this one. With Dean's deal being the major through plot of the season, most of the focus was on how Dean was dealing with (or failing to deal with) his looming deadline, with occasional peeks at how Sam was feeling about it. However, "Mystery Spot" went a long way toward making up for the lack of Sam's character development in the rest of the episodes. The writers crammed a ton of character development for Sam into that one episode, and I loved every second of it. There was also some good stuff to be had in "Fresh Blood." In the end, I think I'll have to call it a win, but just barely.
4. Sam and Dean on motorcycles (oh, like I'm the only one)
Sadly, no. But have you seen the picture of Jared on a motorcycle on the Friday the 13th set? I was a very happy fangirl.
5. No more vertically striped button-down shirts for Sam (like they need to make him look taller)
I think I'll call this one a win. He wore a few vertically striped button-down shirts, but he spent most of the season in plaid, which suited him better. I still think he looks best in solid fall colors like he was wearing when Dean was teaching him car maintenance at the end of "Fresh Blood."
6. Agent Henriksen getting very confused the more he looks into what the boys are up to
I think I'll call this one a win even though Henriksen didn't find out about the supernatural through his own investigation, but rather through being possessed. The bottom line is that he did find out what Sam and Dean were really doing and became their ally in the end. I think Henriksen would've made a great hunter if Lilith hadn't killed him.
7. Sam kicking butt and taking names (his takedown of the SWAT guys last year did not last long enough)
Another qualified win. Much of Sam's kicking butt happened off-screen in "Mystery Spot," but I loved ScaryHunterPerson!Sam. He also got a few good moves in scattered throughout the season, especially his epic battle with Vampire!Gordon in "Fresh Blood." More please.
8. Ruby and Bela having no more screen time or impact on the show than Ellen and Ash did (if Katie Cassidy and Lauren Cohan's names appear in the opening credits as regulars instead of guest stars, I will fling large, heavy objects at my TV)
I was forced to fling large, heavy objects at my TV. Fortunately, I'm not in very good shape so the objects barely cleared the coffee table, thus saving me from a TV-less fate. Ruby seemed to move in and out of episodes without completely taking them over, but Bela had a few episodes that she was in way too much for no good reason, "Red Sky at Morning" in particular, and she pinged my Mary Sue meter several times. She sounded like she could've been a cool character at the beginning of the season, but I'm not at all sorry to see her go.
9. The return of Sam's sense of humor (he had one in season 1; didn't see much of it in season 2)
Another qualified win. Sam's sense of humor is so dry that it doesn't make for good quotes like Dean's one-liners, but we did see more of Sam's sense of humor this season than last season. More please.
10. Gordon, preferably getting his head handed to him by the boys
O.O Sam, I meant this in a completely metaphorical way, I swear.
