I knew the breakup was coming from the expression on Katie's face every time she tried to soothe Rodney's frazzled nerves and he blew her off.
Katie was all wrong for Rodney long term, but I think she was a good learning experience for him. He was slowly learning how to be polite and considerate of others' needs. He needed somebody as patient and low-key as Katie to practice his people skills on. Now, he can go and use his improved people skills on someone who is a good match for him, but who he might not have been able to make a relationship work with if he hadn't gotten dating practice in with Katie.
