I think this episode should win some kind of award for having a plot that least resembled what the trailer implied it would be about.
It should also win an award for cramming the most plots into one episode. Usually, there's just an A story and a B story, but I think this one also had a C story and a D story. Ultimately there were so many stories going on at once that the episode didn't have time to cover any of them with any depth.
I'm so proud of Cole, though. He's been training for so long to avenge his father's murder. It must've been hard to set all that aside and walk away. Can you imagine if Dean finally got to confront the YED, and the YED said, "Actually, I saved your life. Your mother was a monster that was going to kill you"? As proud of him as I am, I'm also a little disappointed that story wrapped up so neatly and quickly. We haven't really had a human nemesis in awhile and I always loved (or loved to hate) Gordon.
I'm also proud of Hannah. Okay, I was also kind of pissed at her for being cruel to Joe, but on reflection I think she was trying to do the right thing but wound up doing a cruel thing due to her limited understanding of human nature. But when Hannah felt Caroline's love for her husband, she stepped out and let Caroline go home. That's another story that wrapped up too neatly and quickly. Caroline had been missing for a year. Joe obviously loved her and had been frantically looking for her, then when he found her, she said she'd just run off with another man. And yet after all that, and after Caroline spent a year being possessed, they just hug like Caroline was coming back from a weekend business trip. I suspect they have a lot of talking to do.
Meanwhile, I had my hands all over Sam's body...and I'm not done yet:
