So, yesterday was Free Comic Book Day, and I braved the crowds at Dreamland Comics because I wanted to pick up Grimm #0. The story was decent enough, but, umm, Nick finds it hard to "tow the line" between cop and Grimm? Monroe has a "Pilates regiment"? Was this thing proofread at all? It was noticeably full of bad grammar, misspellings, and dropped words. I suffered secondhand embarrassment on behalf of the writers and letterer the whole time I was reading it.

And I really want to see the military uniforms of the Pilates regiment.

I was at Dreamland, too! Got there about a half hour before they opened and was about sixth in line. By the time 10 am rolled around the line was waaaay down the sidewalk. Was disappointed that we could only choose three titles. At the comic store close to my house you could get five. And the library was only giving out one. So I ended up with nine books by noon. :-)

I, too, couldn't believe the typos in the Grimm book. Seriously?? I know it was a free issue, but c'mon. Doesn't inspire confidence in the upcoming issues, you know?

The story was so-so but at least the art was decent.

Wow, that's terrible. Sounds like it skipped editing altogether. However, Pilates regiment made me laugh out loud. I have a mental image of a bunch of people marching in bare feet and yoga pants.

I was running late (I'm so not a morning person), so I got there about 10:10. The line was indeed long, but I had my book with me, so I got some reading done. And of course once I got in the store, I was browsing the shelves and pulling out things to buy as I went. Would you believe that when I finally got up to the table o' free comics around 10:30, there were only 4 Grimm comics left? Everything else still had giant piles. I didn't care so much about only being able to pick 3 because I only wanted the Grimm one, but I also picked up The Red Ten and Mouse Guard. Which ones did you get?

I swear there were a couple of panels that seemed like they were written with Google Translate.

Unfortunately, "Pilates regiment" made me laugh too. It threw me out of the story completely.

Ouch. I haven't gotten to Grimm yet, and now I'm almost afraid to read it. I love the idea of camo yoga pants for the Pilates regiment though! Do you think they would use desert and jungle colors or Suburban Mom pink and blue?

We made an afternoon of it and hit four comic shops (although the last one was almost completely cleaned out), American Science and Surplus, and Half-Price Books. So much geeky goodness!

Yeah, I noticed that the pile of Grimm was much less than most other books there. Good thing we both got there early enough to get one!

I ended up getting Star Wars and Superman as well. SW was actually pretty lame, but I enjoyed the Superman one.

I didn't realize that was you until you pointed it out, but yes, I did see you in the pictures.

I was wondering if there were fewer issues of Grimm to give away, or if it was just that popular. It was probably a bit of both if the pile disappeared in half an hour. I know most of the people I saw carrying their free comics around seemed to have a copy of Grimm. I was kind of surprised how popular it turned out to be considering how small the fandom is.

Grimm really wasn't all that bad, aside from being in desperate need of a proofreader. The plot was decent and the art was better than many media tie-in comics. At least I could recognize who all the characters were supposed to be, which is more than I could say for some of the Supernatural comics.

And I was forced to make a Grimm icon this weekend.
