I've got my eye on you, Show.
I know a lot of people are excited about Jeremy Carver taking over as showrunner, but I'm feeling less confident. He's written some of my favorite episodes, but he's also written some episodes I hate like burning, so I'm just not sure how his tenure is going to work out.
I've always said that I can put up with almost anything from this show as long as they don't screw with the brothers' relationship. Then they screwed with the brothers' relationship. I put up with it in season 4 because I thought it wouldn't last long. After all, the show usually only drags out plot points for half a season. I put up with it in season 5 because I was promised that was the season the brothers would reconcile. By season 6 I was sick to death of the animosity between them, but fortunately the boys did work on their relationship and were really coming back together in seasons 6 and 7. I'll give it a couple of episodes to see where things are going now, but if Sam and Dean are getting back on the animosity train again for season 8, then this is where I get off.
Meanwhile, how many states did the boys visit in this episode? Dean covered everything between Maine and Louisiana, and Louisiana and Montana. Sam covered all the states between Texas and Montana. Then I lost track for awhile before they ended up in Iowa.
I'm having trouble with Sam giving up hunting completely, to the point of hanging poor Kevin out to dry. We've never been shown the soul-crushing weariness and hunting burnout from Sam the way we have with Dean, going all the way back to "Croatoan." But abandoning Kevin and not even looking for Dean or trying to get him out of Purgatory just makes Sam look like a douchebag for no apparent reason. Amelia had better be something pretty special. And she'd better not be that bitchy, judgmental veterinarian.
About the only thing I really liked in this episode was that the Winchesters can never just say "hello;" they have to douse themselves and/or each other with various liquids and draw blood. Oh, I also liked Kevin explaining things to his possessed girlfriend: "There's a demon in you and you're going to your safety school."
So yes, I've got my eye on you, Show. I'm open to working things out, but I also have my separation papers ready if it turns out that we've just grown apart.
