Castiel's story arc of being corrupted by power and doing bad things with good intentions so closely mirrored Sam's in season 4 that I'm surprised none of the other characters ever mentioned it until this ep.
Technically Castiel isn't possessed and being controlled by leviathans, Jimmy is. Castiel has been possessing Jimmy all along. Which, poor Jimmy. It's Grand Central Station in that guy's body.
