I think it was just because they're so close in real life that it seemed like a more "hollywood" sort of thing if they did the opposite and couldn't stand each other, since that's the way it is on a lot of other sets. All the women on Desperate Housewives hate each other, apparently, for example (not that I watch it, but that's what I've heard). That's my take, anyway.
