Movie: The Hidden
Jul. 13th, 2007 10:36 pmYesterday sucked out loud and left me with a screaming tension headache, so I decided to console myself with two of my favorite guilty pleasures: Hershey's Kisses and my new DVD copy of The Hidden (which replaces my collector's ed. VHS set, which replaced my standard VHS copy).
The Hidden stars a very young Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks) and Michael Nouri, and it features Claudia Christian (Babylon 5) as a stripper. It's a cheesy SF/horror movie that has surprisingly likeable characters, unexpectedly good dialogue, a very dry wit, and tons of action. I especially like Kyle MacLachlan in this movie. The part of Lloyd Gallagher is perfect for him. The only thing that hasn't aged well is the wardrobe on the supporting characters. The movie came out twenty years ago, and it's been awhile since I've seen so many shoulder pads and yellow business suits and big hairdos.
I also watched it again with the commentary track on ('cause I'm a geek like that). I have no idea who Tim Hunter is, but he didn't say much anyway. Most of the talking was done by director Jack Sholder. He "umm"ed and "ahh"ed too much, but he did have some interesting things to say when he could get the words out. He also was not afraid to say which actors he thought were good and which ones he thought were "especially atrocious."
Three things I did not know:
1.) Except where they couldn't avoid it (light bars on police cars, the sky, etc.), they deliberately chose not to use the color blue at all in the movie.
2.) Claudia Christian choreographed her own striptease scene.
3.) Jack Sholder looked at Kyle MacLachlan in his FBI suit on the first day of filming and started having doubts about the casting. KM just looked too young and fragile to pull off an FBI agent in an action flick. Then he looked through the camera lens to set up the shot, and KM looked bigger and more assertive. JS kept looking at KM in person, then through the lens, then in person, and finally concluded "That's why some people are movie stars."
