the_other_sandy: Black and white TV (TV)
Wow, this last week has been a circus. Here's hoping I remember what happened in the ep.

Well, one thing that definitely happened is that TPTB decided to thin the herd a bit. The Marine sergeant, Eric Doyle, Knox, and Meredith all died. I didn't put Flint on the list because everyone else who was in the burning room with him seemed to have escaped unscathed, so until the show tells me otherwise, I'm counting Flint among the living.

I'm not at all sorry Eric Doyle is dead. He is definitely an argument in favor of Nathan's plans to round up specials in the name of public safety. I feel sorry for the Marine, though. All he wanted to do was serve his country and protect his teammates. Why couldn't Maya have gotten bumped off instead?

Tracy and Mohinder working together could be entertaining. The two of them could wind up giving people powers, only to have those people rounded up and imprisoned by Nathan's people.

Daphne finally brought up what a lot of fans have been discussing for awhile now--how the ability a person manifests is related to who they are. Peter's empathy totally suited his nature, the Marine who couldn't save his squad got superstrength, disabled Daphne became a superfast runner, and Ando, who occasionally chafes at being Hiro's sidekick, got the ultimate sidekick ability of powerboost--a power that's completely useless to him for himself but very helpful to others. But what does that say about Mohinder becoming a psychotic human fly?

I'm glad Sylar stopped fighting his inner crazy person. He's much more interesting as a sociopath than as a tragic, misunderstood woobie. I'm equally glad that he was also officially confirmed as a non-Petrelli, but I'm disappointed that his batshit crazy mother is apparently not his birthmother either. Am I the only one who thinks that Sylar and his issues make more sense if the apple didn't fall far from that tree?

I only have one question about Hiro's trip to the past. Where the heck is his sister? He's in New York. Both of his parents are in New York. The sister is close enough in age to Hiro that one would hope they didn't leave her home alone back in Japan, but no one's even mentioned her.

Michael Dorn (Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) joined the ranks of other Trek vets who have appeared on the series: George Takei (Star Trek), Nichelle Nichols (Star Trek), and Dominic Keating (Enterprise). Now all we need is someone from Star Trek: Voyager to have all the different Trek TV series covered.

Nathan is giving me a headache. While I agree that most of his issues stem from Future!Peter shooting him, Nathan always made a clear distinction between Future!Peter and Present!Peter while talking to or about Future!Peter at the time, so to me, Nathan blaming his brother for the shooting is a lot like Hiro blaming Future!Ando for killing him. And I wouldn't say that Peter always disappoints the people who believe in him (although Peter has certainly been a major disappointment to his family), but Peter has certainly been disappointed by people he believes in often enough.

Nathan is walking a very fine line with his new project, because he has an ability of his own. How long before someone finds out and Nathan winds up imprisoned in his own facility? Can I just go ahead and call the prison Genosha? And call Nathan's mutant hunters Sentinels? Does every volume's major underlying plot have to come from X-Men comics?

Peter really needs to stop waving guns at people. No one on earth actually believes he's going to shoot anyone for real (Arthur notwithstanding). I loved how Peter was perfectly happy to destroy Mohinder's lab and even accept help from bad guys Knox and Flint, but he totally drew the line at hurting Mohinder. We even got reminded (for the first time in a long time) that Peter was a nurse when he called a time-out on the destruction to examine the injured Mohinder.

It was just so sad how Peter bit the bullet and gave himself powers again just so he could save his brother, only to have said brother admit that he wouldn't have done the same and abandon him. The Petrelli brothers not getting along is hardly unprecedented, but there was still a certain amount of love underlying the animosity that I'm not sure is there now. I hope they reconcile at some point. They really are two halves of a whole and they do better when they work together.
