SPN Ep: Meet the New Boss

The owls are not what they seem.

I've read plenty of fic where Sam or Dean are tortured in hell by being made to think they're free and/or with each other, only to have the fake reality yanked out from under them. That plot works really well in fic because we're experiencing events from the tortured character's point of view, so we don't know what's real and what isn't any better than the POV character does. Unfortunately, the show has to show us what Bobby and Dean are up to when they're not with Sam, so we know what's real and what isn't even if Sam doesn't. Kind of kills the suspense. The only thing I'm wondering now is whether Lucifer is a totally fictional construct of poor Sam's scrambled brain, or if the real Lucifer has managed to telepathically connect with Sam somehow now that the wall has come down and is inflicting this mental torture on him.

Based on the season finale, I figured Castiel would be the Big Bad this season, but I thought it would be Castiel corrupted by the power of purgatory's souls, not Castiel's host Jimmy possessed by a leviathan (or leviathans--it looked like there might have been more than one stuck in there). So Misha will still be around, but it'll be interesting to see if Castiel is still alive in there trying to battle the leviathan(s), or if it is (they are?) the sole inhabitant(s) of Jimmy now and Castiel is really dead (not that anyone ever stays dead on Supernatural). I think poor Jimmy can kiss what's left of his sanity goodbye though.

I'm sure there are people who were upset that the show didn't use "Carry On Wayward Son" for the THEN section, but as much as I like that song (and liked it long before Supernatural got ahold of it), I was kind of burning out on it after all these years so it was nice to hear another song in the mix, even though I'm not a fan of Foghat.

So, long story short: I'm not really feeling any suspense or urgency about what's going on at the moment, but I am curious about how it's going to play out.

On the Lucifer question: That's what I was wondering too! If they do end up doing a Season 8, the only plot I can think of (at this point) would be that Lucifer and Michael break out of the cage. If Lucifer has a direct line to Sam, then that sounds a lot more likely than before.

I hope Cas is still alive. And I really hope that Jimmy's soul moved onto heaven a LONG time ago, because if not, like you said, he's going to be seriously screwed up.

I was always under the impression that 'Carry On My Wayward Son' was reserved solely for the finales. Have they used it for the premieres before?

I'd have to agree that there's not a big sense of urgency here - and that the suspense of the 'whats real and what isn't' thing is diminished by the fact that WE know even though Sam doesn't. But like you, I am curious to see where they're going with it.

I was a bit baffled about the God thing but now that I've had some explanation and theories thrown my way, its making a lot more sense. I'd like to think that somehow Castiel is still there and that maybe the door could be left open for him to come back.

As for the music, I didn't like the opening because I didn't feel like that song fit with the boys or the story at all - but I think we just get Carry On My Wayward Son for finales, not premieres. I'd be surprised if they changed that - kind of a nostalgia thing at this point. =)

Carry On is only used at the finale. There's always some random song at the beginning. I wanted to hear Boston for some reason, but the Foghat song was okay.

It would make me beyond happy if Lucifer was now psychically connected to Sam! Even if we get Mark Pellegrino's occasional appearance I'd be happy.

As much as I like the episode and is curious about how the rest of the season will pan out, I'm a teeny weeny bit disappointed about the possession theme with Castiel. Seriously, another 'my body is being taken over by evil' plot after Meg!Sam, Lucifer!Sam and Michael!Adam is just too much for me. I would rather Castiel be corrupted then being controlled by the levithans.
