Creation's Salute to Supernatural -- Chicago 2010 -- Sunday
For those of you who have read my con reports before, this will not be one of my obsessively detailed ones. For one thing, I'm still sick (have been since last Wednesday). For another thing, Supernatural fandom exhaustively documents fandom goings on like no other fandom I've ever been in. I have no doubt that the entire con will be up on YouTube by the time I finish typing this. I'll just hit the highlights. Meanwhile, try to find the YouTube vids of the main panel of the day. I really can't do it justice.
The original plan was for Jared and Misha to each do a half hour alone and to also do a half hour together. Creation kept telling us that Jensen wasn't scheduled to do a panel, but did anyone really think he was going to fly across the country just for autographs and photo ops? If nothing else, I didn't think he'd be able to resist the temptation to screw with Misha and/or Jared while they were on stage. I was right. :-)
Misha Collins
Misha was up first. Keep in mind that you can only believe so much of what he says.
As soon as he came out, he found a feather on the stage and said, "What were you people doing on stage before I got here?" He was a little worried about chicken sacrifices.
He said he rarely improvises dialogue as Castiel. He was asked not to.
A fan asked him about the sigils Castiel carved in his torso, and Misha joked that he was very method and had carved those in himself with a straight razor at home. When he got to the set, the make-up people who were going to paint them on had nothing to do because he'd already taken care of it. He's disfigured for life, but he felt it was worth it for the realism it added to the scene. ;-)
One of the mics wasn't working, so Misha ran over to let the fan use his. He stood really close to her, which made her a little nervous, and she kept stepping away to try to get her personal space back and not have to look at him cross-eyed. But he closed the space every time and finally asked, "Why are you backing away from me?"
Misha Collins and Jared Padalecki
Jared came up to the microphone to ask Misha what it was like working with that Jared guy, and Misha was all "Who?"
There was some confusion over whether Jared was going to be on stage solo or with Misha, and in the end Misha stayed. They tortured some poor girl with laryngitis by making her ask her own question (her friend had been asking questions for her all weekend), then making fun of her voice and asking her to repeat the question just to listen to her squeak. When she was finally able to get her question out unmolested, she asked Jared if it hurt his feelings when people called him "Gigantor" and other names. He replied, "Yes, I need a hug," and ran off the stage to hug her. Then he got back on stage and apologized for teasing her.
In one of the early seasons (season one maybe?), Jared and Jensen had been filming a scene where they had to drive the Impala past the camera, then circle around a couple of blocks to do it again. At the time, Smallville was shooting a couple of blocks away, and as they were circling around, they spotted Tom Welling on the street and stopped to talk to him. The director kept yelling action over the radio at them, so Tom Welling jumped into the back seat and got down on the floor so they could keep talking. When the director finally called cut, Jared, Jensen, and Tom Welling all got out of the car and freaked everyone out.
A fan started asking Jared about being an ass-kicking "rahr Gigantor" (and yes, she made the growly noise), and Jared literally fell out of his chair laughing. She never did get to finish asking her question because she kept making the growly noise, and it killed Jared every time.
Misha Collins, Jared Padalecki, and Jensen Ackles
Ha! I knew he wouldn't be able to leave them alone. Jensen came up to the mic and, in a squeaky fan voice, stuttered out a request for Misha's best Dean impression. Which Misha did, and cracked up both Jensen and Jared.
Creation brought out an extra chair and mic for Jensen, and he said, "I hope you don't mind. I was getting bored back there." Nobody minded. ;-)
A fan asked Misha why he seems to put so much more effort into interacting with fans (via Twitter and cons and with the whole Minion thing) than some other actors, and Jensen replied, "Because he doesn't work and he has to do something."
Another fan started complimenting Jared on his performance and how he's portrayed the different aspects of Sam as Sam has changed through the seasons. Then she started going on and on, describing his portrayal of Sam season by season, and Jensen and Misha both jumped out of their chairs and whipped out their cell phones. Jensen put on his sunglasses and pantomimed an angry conversation with his agent about the attention Jared was getting, while Misha apparently checked his messages and took pictures of Jensen with his phone. Meanwhile, Jared was blushing to death. He and Misha had had a running gag going all day about having paid various fans to say nice things about them, so Jared reached for his wallet and asked her if she took credit cards. Then he went over and hugged her.
Everyone seemed to be asking for impersonations this con. Someone asked Jared to do his Castiel impression, and Jensen piped up, "Oh, this'll be easy. He does this on set all the time." So Jared did his uptight Castiel impression and made Jensen laugh. Then the fan asked for fallen Castiel from "The End." Jensen said, "I like this one too," then doubled over laughing while Jared did the exact same impression, only changing his line delivery to a stoner dude voice.
The whole room moaned in unison when Creation wrapped up the panel. I don't actually have a lot of notes even though it ran long, (a) because I was laughing too hard to take any, and (b) because the boys interrupted fans and each other, and talked over each other, and ran off on tangents so much that it was too chaotic to take notes or remember anything. It was a lot of fun though.
Brock Kelly
A surprising number of people stayed for his panel. Not that he's unpopular or anything, but my experience is that the auditorium clears out like a ghost town after Jensen and Jared appear. I think at least some of it had to do with Jared and Misha still signing autographs and doing another session of photo ops, so fewer people took off to go home after the first panel.
Anyway, Brock is not a natural storyteller and hasn't figured out how to elaborate on questions yet. His answers were all really short and to the point. After several really stupid fan questions in a row, I bailed. There's only so much facepalming I can do before I give myself a concussion. Did anyone else hang around 'til the end? Did it get any better?
