Due South wasn't my first fandom (I'd been going to cons and reading fan fic in print zines since 1984), but it was my first online fandom in that I discovered fic was now available on the internet and in that I joined an online discussion group for the first time (on ONElist, which became eGroups, which became Yahoo!Groups).
In this fic, Ray Vecchio has just married Stella Kowalski and they are honeymooning in Canada, so they decide to stop by Fraser's cabin and tell him the news. They are very surprised to find Ray Kowalski there and that the two of them have somehow acquired six kids. It's pretty much chaos, but it's also pretty much what I imagine RayK and Fraser's parenting styles would be like. Also, my best friend and I still use the line about the zebra as shorthand for having a sucky day more than 20 years after we first read this fic.
There's a companion story--Four Virtues--that explains how RayK accidentally got his job as an environmental researcher, but both it and Eggroll stand alone. You don't have to read both of them to understand either of them.

"You gotta speak up, kid," Kowalski was telling Robbie. "I can't hear you." He leaned forward again, and Robbie moaned something incoherent. "Your what?" Robbie whimpered something, and Ray frowned. "Your zebra? You lost your zebra, is that it? Huh." Ray leaned back against the sofa and regarded the boy in his lap. "Well, there you go. Mystery solved." He reached out and stroked the sweaty blond hair away from the boy's flushed face. "You spilled your juice, your pictures suck, and you lost your zebra. That is a very hard day. That is such a hard day when you are three."
