H50 Ep: I Ka Wa Mamua

Holy crap! Thank you, Show. You don't know how much I needed this today.

I feel like I'm just going to be stating the obvious a lot tonight, but I'm operating on four hours of sleep and boiling a pot of pasta nearly exceeded my skill set earlier this evening, so...

Was it just me, or were TPTB trying to cram an entire season of Danny badassery into this one episode? This is totally not a complaint on my part. Show has been a little short on BAMF!Danny lately and I've missed him.

And now we know what Danny was doing on 9/11--losing his partner in a completely unrelated shooting. And he couldn't get any help for either himself or her (although she was most certainly beyond help by that point), because all the first responders were needed elsewhere. And on top of having his partner shot to death in front of him that day, he would have had to worry about his dad and any friends he had who responded to the towers.

The whole day had started out so well, too, what with him finding out that Rachel was pregnant. I'd always thought that Rachel's fear for Danny regarding his job (and the beginning of the cracks in their marriage) had started later, maybe when Grace was a toddler or in pre-school, but apparently it started much, much earlier, even before they named their daughter for Danny's murdered partner.

Angstiness aside, though, I need to go back and find out who wrote this episode, because it was nice to hear some decent teamy banter again that didn't sound forced and awkward. They really sounded like a family for the first time in a long time, with Max (through his niece) recommending the dress store, Steve preferring Danny in a plunging neckline so he can ogle Danny's chest hair, and the cousins mocking Danny's dancing skills.

And Danny also got to be the most adorable dad ever both at the dress store where the clerk couldn't stop beaming at him, and at the dance itself where he managed to set aside his crappy day to dance to One Direction with his daughter. Grace looked like she was having more fun than anyone else on that dance floor, and Danny was way more graceful than Kono and Chin suggested with their teasing.

We didn't even have to wait until episode 23 for a McDanno hug! (Although this better not be a trade-off--I still expect my episode 23 hug, Show.)

And now I should probably go to bed and try this sleep thing I've heard so much about.

The story for tonight's ep was by Peter Lenkov & the teleplay (the actual script) by Ken Solarz, who was also credited as a Consulting Producer for tonight's ep (& I think S3 as a whole).

Makes sense. I don't know about Ken Solarz, but the episodes that Lenkov is most heavily in tend to be the teamiest.
