I think it's been used in more than the finale, or I wouldn't be so 'OMG Chinese water torture' about it.

It would be kind of cool if Lucifer could mess with Sam whenever and wherever he wants. If it turns out that all these hallucinations are a product of Sam's own mind, well, it seems to be a dark and unhappy place in there.
