Quote of the Day

"Who is going to want to see [Robert] Downey Jr. and [Jude] Law make out? I don't think it would be appealing to women." -- Michael Medved

Michael? Do I need to explain how slash dates back to the 1960s? Or that it's predominantly written by women for women? Do you need a tour of your local Borders to take a look at the yaoi and shonen ai manga? I think I may also have some anime DVDs that you'd find enlightening.

According to that particularly brilliant piece of logic, men wouldn't find films with women making out appealing either.

Oh. Right...

While I suspect that the film will provide us with some lovely slash material, I don't believe it will have anything for some people to "worry" about, especially since they explicitly turned Irene Adler into Holmes' love interest (as opposed to the books where he is certainly fascinated by her, but at an intellectual level). But, Holmes/Watson subtext is really nothing new: I'm a great fan of the Sherlock Holmes superb TV adaptation with Jeremy Brett and David Burke/Edward Hardwick, and I always found endearing the way Watson doted on Holmes (ie telling him to eat and rest when he was in one of his moods), and how sad he was when Holmes apparently died in the Reichenbach Falls (and then his happiness when Holmes reveals himself alive).

Word. :)

I think I will see this movie now. I've always liked Robert Downey Jr, and the Sherlock Holmes adaptations, but if only to prove Mr. Medved wrong, I'll try to see this one in the theaters.
