Dollhouse Ep: True Believer

Wow, I finally felt like I was watching a Joss Whedon show.

Echo had a legitimate assignment that didn't involve being pimped out to anyone, there was more than one layer to the plot, and I didn't want to punch anyone in the face while watching it. Well, except for Topher.

Topher is clearly intended to be comic relief, but Fran Kranz doesn't have David Hewlett's gift for injecting humor into arrogant characters. Mostly, I just think he's obnoxious and not nearly as smart or talented as he thinks he is. He certainly has a superiority complex when it comes to the actives, which is a little dangerous in someone who's literally in charge of their minds. Although he obviously doesn't have as much control as he thinks he does, since the actives are starting to retain memories past their treatments.

Mr. Dominic is someone else who needs a little more supervision. His issues with Echo have gotten so personal that he flew to Arizona to try to assassinate her. Fortunately, Boyd was having none of that and Echo still remembered Mr. Dominic after her treatment. I think Echo is about to have issues right back at him.

Eliza Dushku did a really good job as the blind cultist (with just a little bit of Caroline breaking through at the end). In fact, I think this is the most convincing she's been in any of the personalities so far.

I'm sure someone better at it than I am will do justice to the religious allegories in the cult storyline with a meta. I usually have to be hit in the head with a brick to notice that sort of thing myself, but I loved Adelle likening the Dollhouse and its tabula rasa residents to the garden of Eden, with poor Victor's "man reaction" to Sierra in the shower as the snake that will bring it all down.

Please tell me this episode wasn't an anomaly and I can stop spiking my blood pressure while watching the show.
