Heroes Ep: The Eclipse, Pt. 1

When fandoms collide.

Seriously? Sam's Comics in Lawrence, Kansas? Somehow, I don't think that's what Sam Winchester would have been doing if he weren't a hunter.

Tracy? I realize you think you're being all clever and stuff by playing the double agent for Pinehearst, but even without her prophetic dreams (which probably told her you were going to betray the Primatech side before you even decided to do it), Angela is about a billion times more cunning and clever and devious than you are. You are not fooling Angela. I'm just sayin'.

Looking back on my recent Heroes reaction posts, I noticed I've been basically going 'la-la-la can't hear you' to Mohinder's entire storyline. This has been working well for me in that it keeps me from throwing large, heavy objects at my TV, but now that the eclipse has returned Mohinder to something resembling sane and functional, I'm tempted to pay attention to him again for a little bit. I'll probably regret it later.

You know, I'm probably being oversensitive about this because the most recent episode of Stargate Atlantis boasted two major scenes of really bad science, but total eclipses don't cover a whole lot of the Earth's surface, and certainly not all at once. Some of those characters should have only been seeing a partial eclipse, and not simultaneously.

When Bennet started training Claire to fight, I flashed back to the drawing of him holding a bloody Claire and was afraid that he was going to injure her accidentally while training her. Neither of them knew her healing ability was gone, so he wouldn't have any reason to hold back. That was a great scene, though. Claire has been such a typical teenager this year, thinking that she knows everything, and her dad, who only has years and years of experience over her, is a clueless grown-up. She really needed to have her eyes opened to the fact that she needs way more training and experience if she wants to do her dad's job. It looks like the lesson sank in. Here's hoping it sticks.

Peter and Nathan falling out of the sky into that lake was...a really good idea. They should do that more often. In fact, all the scenes with Peter and Nathan were so made of win that I want to corner TPTB and thump them over the head until they realize what they have here. Heck, after the most significant character interaction Peter and Nathan have had since season 1, TPTB promptly split them up again. Chemistry like these two characters (and actors) have doesn't come along every day. Why don't they make more use of it?

Nathan in Haiti reminded me a lot of season 1 Nathan, the guy who resentfully left a black tie affair to fly down to Texas to bail Peter out of jail. But he's still a sucker for Peter's puppy eyes, no matter how annoyed he is.

Peter was uncharacteristically assertive with Nathan. Usually, Nathan has to do something like give a press conference announcing that Peter is mentally ill in order to get a rise out of him. Calling Nathan "Dad's spineless puppet" was a little out of character for him, but I don't mean that in a 'Peter would never do that' kind of way, more in a 'boy, Peter doesn't do that very often' kind of way. He's not quite as easy for Nathan to dismiss as he used to be.

I've read a lot of blog posts over the seasons about how much of a Mary Sue Marty Stu Peter is for having so many powers, and TPTB at the show agreed and took Peter's powers away from him. The thing that I don't get, though, is that Sylar had at least as many abilities as Peter did and Arthur now has more (he took all of Peter's in addition to the ones he grabbed from other people), yet I don't see anybody complaining that Sylar or Arthur are Marty Stus. Why is it okay for them to have bucketloads of abilities, but not Peter?

I totally don't see the point of making Hiro mentally 10 years old. Aside from not being able to speak English anymore, he doesn't act much different from his usual self. I really hope that plot point resolves itself soon.
