SPN Ep: Lazarus Rising

Holy crap! So much happened in this episode that it felt like a two-parter.

Bobby continuing to test Dean over and over again, even when it looked like he believed that Dean was really Dean, made sense. That's exactly how a hunter would react to seeing someone on his doorstep that he knew was dead. Sam reacting the same way was what made me believe him about not making a deal to bring Dean back.

It didn't take much to figure out that Sam was lying about something, though, even if it wasn't about that. Sam has never been able to lie convincingly to Dean, and having Bobby glaring at him too made it impossible. He couldn't even look at them. I can see why Sam would lie to Dean about working on his abilities. As much as Dean loves Sam and has tried to be a supportive big brother, it's always been obvious that Sam's powers freak Dean right the hell out.

I wonder how much concentration it takes to expel a demon from its host Sam's new way? It's certainly faster than an exorcism and he doesn't have to worry about dropping the book mid-ritual, but if it requires too much concentration, Sam might not be able to keep focus while a demon is trying really hard to distract him by, say, throwing him across a room.

I'm a little lost with Pamela Barnes. Obviously, she's a host for Ruby, which kind of bothered me because this is the first time a demon has chosen someone they know as a host. Pamela must be screaming inside for them to set her free, but Sam keeps working with Ruby. I just wonder how long Ruby has been in Pam. She certainly displayed Ruby's personality before the séance and her comments to Sam in the diner at the end made it sound like they've been working together for awhile, but in that case, why did she need to go to the hospital after she burned her eyes out looking at Castiel? Did she just hold back and not heal herself to maintain her cover for the others?

ETA: Okay, it turns out that it was Kristy who was Ruby's host. I swear those two actresses look exactly alike to me. Anyway, it now makes sense why Pamela's in the hospital, but it makes me a lot more worried about the bra Dean found in Sam's room. If Sam has been sleeping with Ruby/Kristy, I may have to throw up a little. [/edit]

I tend to be a doubter like Dean, but it would explain an awful lot if Castiel really were an angel: the burn mark on Dean's shoulder (I imagine that true good touching anything in hell would be rather like matter and anti-matter colliding), how Dean was able to get out of a four month old grave on his own, the failure of all the anti-demon wards to affect him, and why demons think his appearance signifies the end of the world. If one of their own were really behind the end of the world, you'd think the demons would be thrilled. They certainly were last season.

However, if Castiel really is an angel, that means that Dean is working with an agent of heaven on the sly while Sam is working with an agent of hell on the sly (and Ruby is still a demon no matter what she says or does), and that? Can't be good. Sam and Dean have been slowly growing apart since the first season, with fewer and fewer "Doublemint twins" moments between them, but now they're working more as two individuals than as a team. I just hope this doesn't turn out like X where best friends Kamui and Fuma (unbeknownst to them) were destined to fight on opposite sides of the ultimate battle between good and evil. That...didn't end well.

I'm just gonna say: it was awesome. Such a number of storylines opened up last night, and they all have enormous potential. Here's hoping TPTB and the writer's don't screw it up. This episode really renewed my enthusiasm for the show.

One thing I gotta tell you though - the new Ruby and the Psychic aren't the same actress. I know, I was confused by them, too. There sure were a lot of brunettes in the show last night - Ruby, the Horny Psychic and the waitress/demon - and they all looked too much alike. Ruby is now being played by Genevieve Cortese and Pamela the Psychic was played by Traci Dinwiddle.

You're right, they were. I just fixed my post. I swear they looked exactly alike to me.

I'm not sure that makes me feel better though. I thought the bra Dean found in Sam's room was because he was sleeping with Kristy, the one night stand. If it turns out he was sleeping with Ruby/Kristy, I may have to throw up a little. Too many consent issues.

Yeah, gotta draw the lines of good taste at sleeping with demons. There just isn't a strong enough disinfectant to wash that off. "Too many consent issues" - maybe. But I'm worried about birth control! ;-o

I'm more worried about Kristy being raped twice: once by Ruby taking control of her body without her permission and once by Sam having sex with her while she's possessed and can't consent. I can live with Ruby behaving that way because she's a demon, but I would be seriously ill if Sam ever did something like that.
