Hair-Splitting Nitpick

I've been seeing an awful lot of fic (and a couple of email posts in my Yahoo!Groups) lately quoting lyrics from the song "Hurt" and attributing them to Johnny Cash. With all due respect to the Man in Black, "Hurt" is not a Johnny Cash song. "Hurt" is a Nine Inch Nails song that was later also recorded by Johnny Cash. Proper credit for the lyrics should go to the person who originally wrote and recorded them--Trent Reznor.

I'm just sayin'.

When I quoted "Blue Monday" for a fic, I had two people write me to "correct" me by saying that Orgy did it. I had to be as polite as possible writing back to say that Orgy did a version of the song but did not write it, and that I had actually been correct. I could only imply, "You dumbass."

Young people today...

I don't know if you read the Dear Answerman column over at Anime News Network, but somebody wrote to him about an early ep of American Idol or one of its ilk. A singer had performed "Fly Me to the Moon", and the writer was thrilled to see an anime song performed on a popular American TV show ("Fly Me to the Moon" was used in the closing credits of Neon Genesis Evangelion but obviously did not originate there).

I know the feeling. I'm only 3 years older than you are.

Actually my first 'OMG, I feel old' moment came when I was 17. I was talking about Star Wars with my best friend and a nearby 8-year-old said, "Star Wars? Isn't that that old movie my parents like?" I've never felt so elderly in my life. Well, except for the time I ran into a coworker at Anime Central. He was about 20 and was surprised to see me there. I did the math and realized I'd been going to cons since before he was born.

Time flies.

I've only started to get that "I'm getting old" feeling in the last two years. Star Wars hitting its 30th birthday this year didn't help.
