the_other_sandy: Chicago skyline (Chicago)
Last Sunday, the BF and I were on our way home from dinner here in Greater Chicagoland when we drove past a lawn & garden center and saw this sign:

I had just enough time to think that's exactly how I feel before the BF and I started giggling at the same time for the same reason. Then we made the mistake of making eye contact, and that was the end of us for awhile. Compounding the situation was the fact that her daughter was in the car with us, and let me tell you no one likes being left out of a joke less than a 4-year-old. And no one wanted to explain the joke to her less than we did. Dodging that bullet occupied the rest of the drive.

The BF drove back last night and took a picture of the sign for me because BFs are awesome like that.

Brilliant! Here's an icon of it, because it totally needs to be an icon.

PS - I'm still bringing you Pros stories to MediaWest, yes?

Good job dodging that particular bullet since the 4-year-old in question is really good at picking up on things! I can imagine her at school the next day with a wonderful new expression with which to infect the other kids. (Although since it is primarily a British expression, I'm not sure it would have the same effect as the American equivalent. I think it's best to not test this theory, of course.)

Fortunately she was on the other side of the car and didn't see the sign herself. She only figured out something was up when the BF and I fell apart laughing. Neither of us felt the need to tell her what the sign actually said, let alone what it meant, so I'm pretty sure we're safe.

Oddly enough, I have a co-worker from New York who prides herself on how worldly and multicultural she is (unlike us hicks in the Midwest), and [livejournal.com profile] auntbop and I had to explain it to her.

That's too funny. I felt the same way the first time I saw a "speed hump" sign. I giggled for quite a long time.

I used to have a sign in my old neighborhood that said "slow children at play." And when I was on vacation in London many years ago, there was a sign on the Tower of London that said "Danger: Children." I appreciated the warning.
