In order to keep my giant pile of unread things from getting any bigger, my resolution for 2016 was to not buy a new book until I'd read at least one I already own. How did that go?

The answer is... )

My New Year's resolution this year was to not buy a new book until after I've read one of the many, many books I already own. Now that we're just past the halfway point, how am I doing? Abysmally. It sounded like such a good idea on paper, but I clearly didn't think it through.

Problem #1: Series books. I read a lot of series books. In fact, I read mostly series books. Since I don't already own every book in every series I read, having this rule was creating huge wait times between reading books in the series I'm following.

Problem #2: BookBub. If you're not familiar with BookBub, it's a free online deal alert service for ebooks. You can opt to receive a daily (or weekly) newsletter with ebook deals for $2.99 or less in the subjects or genres of your choosing (including M/M romance), or you can add books to your account and BookBub will email you if there's a deal on them. This has been both great and terrible for me because this is where I end up buying a lot of my ebooks. Because I am cheap cheap cheap.

Problem #3: Samhain Publishing announced they were going out of business. Samhain is my favorite publisher for M/M romance and I had a lot of things on my To Read list on their slate. Since they didn't announce a conclusive date when they would close up shop (they're "winding down operations"), I went over to their site to grab what I could before things started going out of print, coincidentally on a day when they were having a massive site-wide sale where everything I wanted was under $3.00. (See above re: cheap.) (And argh, I just popped over to their site for two seconds to copy/paste their URL and what was on the front page? A new book in a series I read. I just bought another book. Somebody please stop me.) [ETA: Samhain's URL removed because the site is now closed.]

On the plus side, I've mostly given up TV and fic in favor of reading my books, which was my original goal when I started giving myself annual reading challenges back in 2010. So maybe it'll only take six more years before I manage to start reading my own books instead of buying new ones all the time.

Last year I struggled to hit 6,700 pages due to the unusually large number of books I read that I didn't like very much. This year I discovered Listopia, and in particular the list for Gay Romance Featuring Psychics/Mediums/Shamans/Spiritualists, and read an absolutely record number of things for me without even trying. Unfortunately out of the staggering number of things I read in 2015, only about five of them were things I owned when the year started, so the giant pile of unread things has not been reduced at all.

Towards that end, my resolution for 2016 is to not buy a new book until I've read one I already own. Since there are at least seven books I know of coming out in the next year by authors I like, I have little hope that the giant pile of unread things will be hugely reduced, but at the very least it won't get any larger.

Wow, this was an even bigger epic fail than last year. Apparently there's nothing like making something a goal to get me to ignore it completely.

Rather than setting a page count goal this year, I decided to focus my efforts on catching up on series I'm behind on (I read a lot of series books) and books I've owned for a long time but hadn't gotten around to reading yet (Why had I not started reading the Nightrunner series by Lynn Flewelling before now? OMG, it's awesome!). In those aspects the year was a smashing success, even if I am a little disappointed with the total page count.

I'm a little disappointed, but I discovered last year that I have a hard time motivating myself to read when I'm not really enjoying the book, and I hit a record number of books I just didn't like very much this year. Why didn't I just give up on them? Some were books in a series I have otherwise enjoyed, some were by authors I have otherwise enjoyed, and some were books that were recommended to me and I kept waiting for the awesomeness I'd been promised to turn up (spoiler alert: it didn't).

I'll probably track what I read next year just because it's kind of fun to see what I've read over the course of the year, but next year's goal will be slightly more nebulous and difficult to quantify. I want to read some things I've been meaning to read for a long time but just never got around to.

Wow, epic fail. This one can be traced to me checking out more DVDs from the library this year (I got hooked on Teen Wolf and Justified, and I also watched a lot more movies than I have in a long time) and making my friends listen to Welcome to Night Vale for a month and a half instead of watching DVDs on our DVD nights.

I'm going to try this again next year, in part because I've started up cross stitching again in a major way recently and I'm determined to finish the medium-sized project I started 10 years ago or so. I've been stitching my way through my TV shows, so hopefully I can squeeze some DVDs in there as well.

I did it! This was my third consecutive year of setting myself a reading goal to try and make a dent in my giant pile of unread books, but it's the first year I've actually accomplished the goal. *\0/* Of course, I had to cheat like whoa and read manga for the entire month of December to get there, but those manga were on the pile so they totally count. Unfortunately, 12 of these books were bought this year, so I didn't make quite as big a dent in the backlog as I would have liked. I really have to learn to read the books I already own.

Oh, well. At least I hit my book goal. And on the plus side, I did watch more DVDs this year than last year, so I think I'll be trying this again.

Challenged

It's only been just over three weeks, but I've hit my page quota every day on my way to my goal of reading 10,000 pages this year. However, I'm discovering it's a lot easier to hit that page goal when I like what I'm reading, which is not currently the case.

And getting a Nook has not helped with my pack rat tendencies at all. I just added my 41st book to my e-book wish list. Because apparently I suck.
the_other_sandy: Yomiko Readman hugging a book (Agt. Paper Chibi)
For the last two years I've been challenging myself to read as many books as I can in order to make a dent in the giant piles of unread books I own. This has had the unintended consequence of making me avoid the larger books in the pile because they take longer to read, so I've decided to go for page count instead of book count and am challenging myself to read 10,000 pages this year.

My secondary challenge is to watch at least one DVD per week to make a dent in the giant pile of unwatched DVDs. This sounds like an easy challenge, but most of my DVDs are for TV series, so I have to watch anywhere from four to six episodes (sometimes twice if they have commentary tracks) before I can be done with one DVD. It would be so much easier of they were all 90 minute movies.

Wish me luck.

For the third year in a row, my resolution was to declutter. In furtherance of that goal, I did an inventory of un-dealt-with things at the beginning of the year in the hope of having fewer un-dealt-with things in total at the end of the year. Here's how I did:

The List )

So, not great in that I still have a lot of things to deal with, but not bad in that I met my goal of dealing with a lot of un-dealt-with things.

Tomorrow I post the 2012 goals.

For the third year in a row, my resolution is to declutter. Even my 50 books challenge from last year was an effort to declutter the massive piles of books I own but haven't read yet. But focusing on one area just leads to a backlog in another area, so I've done an inventory of un-dealt-with things with the goal in mind of having fewer un-dealt-with things in total at the end of the year than I did at the start. So without further ado, the time stamp post:

Time Stamp )

Look upon it and tremble. I know I do.

The hard part is going to be the DVDs. Almost all of them are TV series, so I have to watch at least 4 episodes of something (sometimes twice to listen to the commentary tracks) before I can be done with one DVD, and some publishers (I'm looking at you, Universal) have double-sided discs with 6-8 episodes on them. It would be a lot easier if all the DVDs were 90 minute movies.

Zines )

I'm almost done with 2 more books (75% through one, 85% through the other), but I won't finish either of them by midnight, so they won't count for this year. I wound up reading a total of 17 books (plus 5 print zines), which is way less than 50 but way more than my usual 2-4 (plus 3-4 print zines), so mission accomplished. And on to next year's goal, which I will post tomorrow.

So, you know that 50 books a year challenge that I rarely post about because it hasn't kept me away from the fic as much as I'd hoped? I've only been at it for 4 months. I do not want to quit after only 4 months. But I have an e-reader now thanks to eBay, and I have a tagging system that I seem to have finally worked the bugs out of, and I have a whole hard drive (and 2 email accounts, and a Delicious account, and my LJ memories) full of fic I haven't read, and I have an attention span that makes people with ADD look focused.

I'm already getting zine pre-order notices for MediaWest (I've only pre-ordered 2 so far, but the con is still 5 weeks away). After MediaWest, I will be knee deep (quite literally) in brand new zines. This is the hardest time of year for me to stay away from fic.

I DO NOT WANT TO QUIT AFTER ONLY 4 MONTHS, but the fic...it's calling to me...

So, you know how I decided to participate in the 50 books a year challenge to get myself reading more books and less fic? Yeah, that hasn't worked out so well. I tripped and fell into a new fandom. And not just any fandom--Pros fandom (stop laughing, [livejournal.com profile] agt_spooky). Yes, not only did I trip and fall into a new fandom, I tripped and fell into a fandom that's been around for over 30 years and has produced a rather staggering amount of fic. Which I am now reading. Because I suck.

First up, I haven't forgotten my cross-stitch project. I haven't gotten to work on it much, what with the holidays and all, but I did make some progress:

Secondly, I've found something new to fail at! Ever since I tripped over the 50 Books a Year Challenge at Goodreads I've been wanting to try it. I actually read a lot, but I've been reading mostly fan fic for the last 11 years or so, and the piles of unread books I own just keep getting larger, so I figured this would give me an excuse to read some of my books.

I was originally going to participate over at Goodreads, but that place just doesn't feel like home to me the way that LJ does. Then I was going to join the [livejournal.com profile] 50bookchallenge comm here on LJ, but it looks like that comm is for posting book reviews and helping rec books for people who are looking for things to read, as well as updating how you're doing in the challenge. Well, I don't know how much I'm going to be writing about what I read, and I have somewhere around 250-300 books that I haven't read yet, so I definitely don't need help finding reading material.

I've decided to just participate in the challenge for myself. I'll be tracking what I read both on Goodreads and in a sticky post here on my LJ.

I don't honestly expect to read 50 books this year (I doubt I can stay away from fan fic that long), but much like the paltry 2300 stitches I did for National Craft Project Month was 2300 more stitches than I would've done if I hadn't participated, any book I read this year will be one more than I would have read if I hadn't participated in the challenge.

Now I just have to go finish the fic I'm reading so I can start a book tomorrow.
